[Soloing TTRPGs] General Discussion [+]

I’ve only done a small amount of solo RPGing but I’ve built up a collection of tools as I am planning to do more. I have the GM Emulator as a ‘main engine’, then I picked up some Hexploration decks for random map generation. I also have some dungeon map dice and geomorph decks for random dungeon generation.

I previously bought some GM tools which contain lists of side quests, NPC name and so on originally as GM inspiration, but these are obviously also useful for solo play.

My plan is to try a range of things and see what resonates for me to refine what I end up using longer term.

Even though D&D (5e or otherwise) is definitely not designed to play solo, I recently ran into these D&D 5e adventures by 'Obvious Mimic Press' specifically designed for solo play. I wondered if anyone here has any experience with them, or any other D&D 5e adventures from other publishers designed for solo play ?
Paul Bimler has a solo module series designed for 5e.

He also wrote The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox part I and II for 5e.

I like unique card decks. For example, I often use my Cypher Intrusion Deck as an oracle. Only 12 card, but each has 3 entries: combat or interaction or misc. I draw three cards, and choose one entry that fits with the situation.

AD&D 2e: Classic solo random dungeoneering: 4 level 2 heroes and 2 henchmen are searching for 5 noble citizens who disappeared from the streets of Waterdeep. Clues have led them deep underground. 9 skeletons are blocking their path. A blade spring trap in the middle of the room might be trouble for the characters!

The heroes are lucky. They find Alek, a missing noble in room 2. He is guarded by three skeletons. There is a trap (quadrant 1d4: 4 south east corner) Quicksand: the floor is an illusion. Anyone stepping on it sinks into a pool of qucksand. The characters have initiative.

My earliest experience with solo gaming was creating characters in Fighting Fantasy / Advanced Fighting Fantasy snd running them through Titan map and random encounters from Out of the Pit - probably more gaming than role playing.

More recently have done some of tge CoC solo adventures which were fun, and happy that games ive backed like the One Ring have put out a solo version as well, though haven't had chance to run it with toddlers in the house again.

I also think cool that items like Captains Log for Star Trek Adventures are out, and would love to see more like that for other rule sets, including likes of the warhammer / 40k games.
