[Soloing TTRPGs] General Discussion [+]

If you want me to keep posting Forbidden Lands solo journal entries, please say so. It takes time to clean them up and make them fun for you. If no one reads or (y)them, it's wasted effort on my part, and I'll stop.

Forbidden Lands Solo

Day 2 Morning
Voranh returns to Ness the smithy to buy a Studded Leather armor. D6? There is one available but Ness wants 10 silver for it (four more than listed price). With the help of Brollo (+1d6 Empathy) they negotiate (3, 6, 6 vs Ness 6, 1, 1) the price down to 8 silver, final offer. Voranh dons his newly bought armor.

Brollo [bookworm] uncovered a while back a [Random Legend] while browsing dusty tomes of Belifar’s library: In the age of the Blood Mist, there was a bloodthirsty Princess, who sought a treasure, because of a promise, and travelled to a cave, located few days off, in a dark forest, in the direction of South-west, as the legend goes it is said she was possessed, and that at the location there is an elven ruby, but also a hungry demon. The Minstrel believes the cave is located near or in the Fangwoods forest. Brollo (Empathy, manipulation = 1 success) vs Voranh (Wits = 2 successes). Vorhan is hesitant. Sindria, agrees with Bollo. (+1d6 = 6). Voranh, is convinced but remains secretly cautious. He doesn’t know them after all. The elven ruby part seems made up to entice him, but he (Wits + Lore = 1 success) has heard legends about them when he was still living in Elvenspring.

The companions buy gear for their expedition and leave The Hollows via the South Gate. There is a breeze, the sky is clear and it is pleasant. They enter a Plains Hex. D66 = 31, No encounter.

I think it's cool. But considering this was a general discussion about solo games, it might make more sense to make a new thread for that. At least that would make it easier for readers following your game to find the entries, and allow others to continue the general discussion here. (I have some thoughts brewing...)

That did not work. The idea of posting on a forum is to get some feedback, questions asked, help, show and tell. If posting generates no activity it's wasted energy.

I disagree. But I "waste my time" a lot here because it is therapeutic for me. Sometimes I just need to be able to write out my thoughts, share my ideas, or offer up a punchline. Even if they are released into a void, it relieves the space in my head that they occupied. I don't need validation or acknowledgement as much as I need a personal outlet (though they are nice to get).

But I also know there is a large audience who stay silent on the boards, watching and reading what comes up. Just because we don't always get a response or a 'like' on a post doesn't mean nobody reads it, or that someone never gets anything out of it. I have my share of private messages and late responses from those who rarely (or never) post on forums. Something I wrote or shared mattered enough to them.

Anyway. Your call.

Didn't want to use the stickers on the beautiful map. Found a BW map and will be adding details as Voranh and companions travel.
Seems like the map printed on the cover spreads of core books.
There are online tools featuring the full color map, which will be convenient due already coming with a hex grid. for instance Yxans klagan
You can also find different versions of static images color hex-grid maps online.

Forbidden Lands Solo
004

Day 2 Morning (continued)

Individual Activities:
  • Voranh decides to Hike + Lead the Way onto the next hexagon = Forest, three successes. No mishap. Random Encounter, yes.
  • Sindria is on the Look Out, zero success, push = one damage to wits (+1 Willpower point) and 1 success. She spots a snake (lethal poison) hiding in a berry bush. The serpent attacks Brollo, who wanted to eat raspberries, and misses. Sindria moves and then brings the point of her sword down on the snake (1 success, 2 damage), decapitating it.
  • Brollo has lost his appetite, for now!
Afternoon
  • Voranh, (Hike + Lead the Way) hesitates (fail survival roll), push, 1 success but 1 damage to Wits (+1 willpower point). No mishaps entering the next forest hexagon. He finds an Adventure Site. D6? A village. It is a hamlet of 25 souls, built only three years ago and ruled by a wise druid. They have a problem: with two undead human soldiers who were executed for desertion during the time of the Bloodmist. They attack anyone who leaves the wooden fenced hamlet. The well is almost dry. Voranh is willing to help, for a fee. The druid offers free food and lodging, for the night, for his group. Brollo counters for 2 nights! (Manipulation, fail, push, fail, no damage)… It is settled. Clue? Yes + And. The druid draws a map showing the way to the tree from which the soldiers were hanged. The tree is malevolent, watch out for its living roots!
  • The party leaves the compound in search of the tree. It is (d6 x 10 minutes) 10 minutes away from the hamlet. As they are making their way, the two undead soldiers (skeletons), emerge from behind trees and block their path rusty swords drawn. Initiative.
  • Round 1: The skeletons strike first. The first one misses Voranh, the second one misses Brollo. Voranh hits, dealing only 1 damage because his sword is Pointed and not very good against Bony. Sindria strikes the same skeleton, also dealing only 1 damage. Brollo valliantly destroys the skeleton.
  • Round 2: The skeleton tries to Strike (6, 6, 6) Brollo, he tries to Parry (noting, push, 6, 6, plus one damage to Agility). One damage to Strength. Brollo decides to Retreat (fail), the skeleton swings but fails. Voranh, inflicts 1 damage, as does Sindria.
  • Round 3: The skeleton tries to strike (d6 Sindria), she parries. He fails. Voranh Destroys the undead.
  • Is this the end of the encounter? No + And. The skeleton bones are slowly reattaching themselves! In (d6) 3 rounds the undead will attack again.
  • Did Brollo find the tree while the two others were fighting? Yes + And. Brollo was paying attention. Seeing the skeleton bones moving he stabs the hanging tree with his short sword (fail) but it bounces on the bark. The tree attacks with a root and Brollo tries to Parry. Stalemate.
  • Imitating Brollo’s attempt, Voranh and Sindria plunge their swords into the tree, inflicting 5 damage (Bark 2 armor, fail). The tree starts to bleed red blood.
  • The tree attacks (d6) Brollo who tries to Parry. He avoids all damage and strikes back inflicting 1 damage. Voranh and Sindria attack again, inflicting 6 damage (Bark 2 armor, fail). The tree becomes inert, it is dead. The skeleton bones cease to move.
  • The characters force march back to the hamlet. The community is now free of the cursed undead warriors!
Evening:
  • A modest banquet is organized in their honour. The druid treats their wounds. The music heals their souls.
Night:
  • Voranh and companions sleep a restful night at the Boisterous Bard Inn.
(I like this system. It's a keeper.)
