Spellcraft Checks

Here is a simple question about Spellcraft that has already been answered, I'm sure.

Can you take 10 or take 20 on a Spellcraft check?

Depends.

You can't take 20 on anything that has a consequence for failure, other than failing the check itself.

For example, you couldn't Take 20 to memorize a spell from a captured spellbook, since a failure would mean you'd have to wait until the next day to try again.

You could Take 10, however.

If you're in combat, you can never Take 10 or 20. It's "on the spot" and you are "threatened".

So learning spells from another's spellbook is automatic if you have enough ranks in Spellcraft? By this I mean, if you take 10 and add your ranks then that is what level spell you can learn from the foreign spellbook.
For instance, my wizard has 8 ranks in spellcraft. He can automatically memorize all 0, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells from a captured spell book. Does that sound right?

Yes, as long as they are spells he has scribed in his spellbook.

-edit- by learning I assume you mean preparing. One cannot learn a spell without spending the money to scribe it.

You don't add your ranks, you add your skill modifier, which is (INT modifier) + ranks.

And just to set everything straight, you can Take 10 to:

- Decipher the writing of a scroll or foreign spellbook (Read Magic would be automatic)
- Understand a spell from a foreign spellbook or from a scroll
- Once the spell is written to your spellbook, memorize the spell from a foreign spellbook (used as a backup, for instance)

so the answer is yes?

My wizard has recently defeated another wizard and taken his spell book. Most of the spells he didn’t have himself in his spell book. Before the battle, my wizard had actually had his spell book taken away, and he will probably never see it again. In the new spell book are the usual 0 level spells, five 1st level spells, four 2nd level spells, four 3rd level spells, three 4th level spells, and two 5th level spells. He has 5 ranks in Spellcraft plus an Intelligence bonus of 3, for a total of 8. He casts Read Magic to decipher all the spells in the book, and he need not ever decipher them again.
At this point, can I take 10 to memorize all of the spells of levels that I can cast, meaning up to the 3rd level of spells? The DC is 15+ spell level. My total is 18 if I take 10, so 3rd level spells. I can now use this new found spell book as my own, or at least up to 3rd level spells until I increase my ranks in Spellcraft, right?

You can only memorize the spells in the foreign spellbook that you've already had scribed in yours.

To gain access to the other spells in the foreign spellbook that you didn't have before, you need to start a new spellbook, and pay the price in time and money to copy them. (PHB 155)

You can Take 10 with all the Spellcraft checks associated, so you'll automatically succeed up to the 3rd level, and have to roll for the others.

And, yes, you automatically succeed memorization for spells you knew before up to the 3rd level if you use the foreign spellbook.
