[SS] Roll With It (was: (Very) Thick Skinned)

The Souljourner

First Post
I was paging through Savage Species and came across this feat:

Thick Skinned [General]
Prereqs: Con 20, Toughness

Benefit: You gain damage reduction 2/-.
Special: You may take this feat multiple times, the effects stack.

Umm... cool. Quick thought experiment:

Dwarf Fighter 1 - Takes Toughness, Thick Skinned.

Dwarf Fighter 10/Dwarven Defender 10 has taken Thick Skinned as every level based feat - damage reduction 20/-, not to mention on average 260 hitpoints, even without magical enhancement (he could easily have 440 with just a +5 book and +6 bracers of health).

440 Hitpoints and damage reduction 20/-. Holee shee-it. Talk about a tank character.

Could easily have 48 AC, too (well, not easily, it takes a crapload of magic items, but still, nothing too difficult for a 20th level character to get).

He would take a long time to wear down, true. However, he would be losing out on several tactics and abilities, such as weapon focus/specialization, Power Attack and Cleave. Spells will still hurt him though, since his DR is useless there.

Sounds like a cool character concept to me, though.

Well, according to Wizards own feat guidelines the prerequite attribute should be odd numbered, so I think it should be 21 Con.

Neither feat is a fighter feat, so assuming the 20 con is right, the dwarf would need to be third level to take it. Still, it might be a little easy to get for PCs as any DR at those low levels is pretty darn good.

A human sorcerer or wizard with a toad-in-a-box could do it at first level, though.

I'm not sure what feat you're looking at in Savage Species, but it's nothing like the one in my SS book:

Thick-Skinned [Monstrous]
Prerequisite: Damage Reduction
Benefit: Your existing damage reduction improves by 2 (table omitted)
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Each time you take it, it improves your damage reduction by 2, up to a maximum of twice your original damage reduction.

It seems to me you have to have damage reduction already, and this feat can't do any more than double it by taking this feat possibly several times.

Now, the feat you described sounds alot like the epic feat Damage Reduction (pg 52 ELH), except it's 3 per taking of the feat, but again, it's an epic feat, it's supposed to be better.

Don't they have to select feats before they can get a familar though? The feats have to be selected as the level is gained, so I don't see how this could happen.

Sorry, didn't have Savage Species in front of me. Looking at it again, it's called Roll With It. Same stats as I stated.

Ack, toughness isn't a fighter feat? What's up with that? I just assumed it was. Weird. Oh well, I guess my dwarf will have to deal with a pathetic 18/-.

And personally, I think an extra 12/- damage reduction is probably worth the six feats he loses because of it.

He'll still get 7 feats, which is as many as non-fighters get anyway. Of course, three will have to be wasted to go to DD. So yeah, you don't have a ton of feats, but neither do most non-fighters. And you get Defensive Stance and damage reduction 18/- out of it. I'd say it's a fair trade.

I think I'd like playing a character who could get whacked in the face with a greatsword by the strongest man alive and have it just bounce off.

Pretty cool.

P.S. Changed the name of the thread to indicate the correct feat. My bad.
