Hey everyone, Frog overlord here.

It has been some time since we have been back to provide you with an update, but the glorious Frog has returned with some breaking news... with a little over eight month hiatus since the first Star Marshal campaign, we are officially back; after all crime never sleeps and neither do the marshals...

We've been listening to feedback from the first game and have continued our internal playtesting (also known as playing the game), and we feel that our grasp of where Star marshal is going has never been stronger!

Story

You find yourself in the city of Flontux. The largest in the Outer Worlds. Millions of citizens packed into sky-high structures. It's a sprawling mass of steel, industry and advancement. But recently, that's not what the city is known for.

A masked terror has gripped Flontux in the form of a serial killer… The Origami Slayer.

The Slayer and his origami cult have slaughtered dozens. Every kill is another blow to the city's morale. Their calling card? An origami shape of the victims' last moments. They must be stopped by any means necessary.

Eliminate or Capture? The choice is yours.

Be careful. The streets are crowded not only with origami members; there are other groups all claw-ing for their position in the streets. Thankfully, you're not alone; another marshal ID has been tagged - Mortis Deckard.

So what to expect? And how does it play?

If you've played the first Star Marshal then expect a similar core gameplay experience. You must still decide whether to eliminate or capture when dealing with opponents and/or NPCs. Card splits are as they were before: Citizen decks - Locations - Opponents - Interior rooms and casebook events are still around albeit longer this time. (we love a good lore junkie)

The game plays of a 56 card deck (using standard playing cards or the custom bespoke deck)

You will draw from the location cards and choose from the options these are typically a choice between: Drawing Citizen cards (NPCs, event, opponents) or going inside the location via interior cards, these are unique cards that for specific location; each one is a different event in the form of a combat, mini-game or challenge. The third option is the casebook - these are highly dramatised version of events and take place in the casebook with 1 - 4 pages worth of written content that builds the scene then ending with some sort of mechanical event.

  • Draw location
  • Draw citizen cards
  • If possible, draw interior cards (some locations do not have this option)
  • Casebook - the casebook is where the majority of the story takes place. The cards contain descriptions and also tell the story but more indepth dialogue and characters take place inside this book.
As mentioned before, if you're familiar with the first game you'll easily be able to jump right into the second. The biggest difference between the two are the encounters you'll be involved with; the Paper Trails has a more mechanical aspect than the first game, with far more of the NPCs being based around mini-games and challenges that force your character to adapt to their surroundings rather than combats.

Not to say combat isn't important and it is still very much a danger, so you blood lusting Marshals can still cause chaos in your own brand of justice.

The images above are from our first sample deck that has arrived. The cards are a soft touch linen-blend material which does exactly that; the cards being incredibly smooth and easy to shuffle with the linen also creating a rugged texture feel that make them extremely satisfying to use, which you can see on slight raised ridges on the location card (left hand image)

We have an entire gallery on the kickstarter page, in-which you can see more detailed pictures of individual cards. Of course, everything here is subject to change as we have not yet had our editor review the card files so any mistakes will be fixed.

The most notable addition to this campaign is the FREE fictional story that comes included in all tiers.

The story is a prequel to the main game and follows two detectives - Senior investigator David Dempsey and Rookie Carl. (he has to earn his last name) The story follows them on a call out to a crumbling apartment block and details their first encounter with the Origami cult and the Slayer himself...

Do they have what it takes to survive? Maybe?

We love creating stories around our games and massively helps with the creative process, but we have never released a fully fledged story in this format. The story is close to 6000 words and dramatically sets the tone of the main game. This is an action packed character focused tale and there are no guarantees on anyone's survival.

This is completely FREE both in PDF and PRINT. You will always recieve the digital file and upon backing a PRINT tier you will automatically get the physical version. Use the hyperlink below to download a couple pages from the story alongside several of the game cards and casebooks!

That's all from us for now, check out the kickstarter page for more information including the expansion deck available!

Until next time, I'll see you on the battlefield.
