I prefer my Trek to be idealistic. The whole idea behind Section 31 was someone was out there doing nasty things so the Federation could thrive. That isn't idealism, it's cynicism. I don't expect characters in Trek to be perfect, I find it better when they have flaws to overcome, but Section 31 isn't what Trek is supposed to be about.

Remember, Section 31 isn't just Star Trek intelligence. They're supposed to be the equivalent of the Romulan Tal Shiar and they engage in assassination, biological warfare, etc., etc. They're the bad guys.

Yeap, thats how S31 was portrayed in DS9 anyways. Most fed officers found the existence of S31 troubling at best.

I thought Section 31 was an interesting wrinkle in DS9 and was worth looking at within that show… but i never thought they should be the focus of a show or explored too in-depth. That's my feeling. So, this show is of little interest to me sadly. Then again, I haven't been very interested in a Trek show since after DS9 (I did watch Voyager and Enterprise but my heart wasn't fully in it; I found Strange New Worlds to be okay but I'm not that interested in exploring that era; this is just in case I have weird bias that may be clouding my interest in the show).

I thought Section 31 as portrayed in Discovery wasn't too bad prior to being taken over by the AI ... but Picard made it much more explicit that they were bad guys -- essentially Section 31 was the cause of the changelings' "evolution" that allowed the events of Picard S3 to happen in the first place.

So yeah, not my kind of Trek. As much as I like Yeoh, I'll probably skip this show. What with Star Wars making the Jedi out to be badwrongfun, I don't want Star Trek going the same way.

That being said, if this clip is anything to go by, S3 of Strange New Worlds looks like it will be a lot of fun:
