Spoilers Supergirl

I left a brief comment in the trailer thread but I think this film should probably have a properly spoiler tagged thread.

I have seen it. I really liked it. That is the short summary of my day.

Are there details that we can spend time debating? Yes. But the film is, I think, mostly cohesive. Despite the spoiler tag I am not eager to actually spoil anything in this first post so I do not think I will go deeper than that just yet.

I would definitely recommend seeing it in general. And if you were considering going to see it in theatre I would endorse that.

I enjoyed it in parts. I thought Millie Alcock was very good in the main role, but the rest of the cast was largely forgettable, including Jason Momoa (sadly). The action was pretty well done in parts, though I must admit that by the third or fourth time she was caught out and incapacitated by something I really started to lose interest.

So... it's okay. It's not the horror some of the review-bombers really want it to be, but it's very far from being a masterpiece. In terms of similar movies, it's better than the original "Supergirl", slightly better than "Wonder Woman 1984" and "The Marvels", but not as good as "Captain Marvel" and a long way behind "Wonder Woman".

Back from seeing it.

It was far from perfect but it was a fun, watchable action film. They had to randomly depower her four(!) times so that they could have action scenes followed by “got my powers back!” cleanup scenes. And there were about four of those someone's about to be killed in a tense scene, but an offscreen saviour (usually Lobo or Supergirl) suddenly appears and blocks the blow situations. But that complaint aside, it was decent. Very Guardians of the Galaxy, as you could probably tell from the trailers. Lobo was fun although not really necessary. And she got a decent character arc from being depressed and feeling she had no place to returning to earth ready to be a hero. Plus the dog was saved, which is all that really mattered.

Flawed, but fun. And I have new nerd stuff.

Nerdy questions:

1) Since when did a green sun kill Kryptonians? I know a yellow sun powers them, and a red sun does not, but green suns killing them?

2) When she drank the poison, they were surprised she wasn't paralysed. The implication there is a Kryptonian is weakened by the poison but not killed like everyone else. So why not just take Krypto to a yellow sun to cure him?

I agree. I enjoyed it, but it's not perfect. I liked the take on her character and I liked the pseudo Mad Max vibe going on. Supergirl is the only character of interest in the movie though, and while it would seem that shouldn't be an issue, it is. Something else, apart from her, needed to provide some emotional weight to the movie, and it isn't there.

You could probably chalk that up to Kryptonian canids not having biology exactly like Kryptonian hominids. Clark seems to suggest he still has some kind of adverse reaction to chocolate too despite being Kryptonian.

I don't recall multiple depowerings in the comic, which definitely seems like a weird choice narratively. Kara starts off depowered and stays that way through most of the adventure, which is why she's on the bus, etc. So she's a great fighter because she knows how to fight, not because she's at full Supergirl strength.

But I suspect that read as not exciting enough for a Supergirl film to someone at the studio, hence wanting to play with the power dial repeatedly.
