Yeah, I wonder if this is more about the general tendency to need to feel motivated to go to a theater at all than something specific about superheroes.

In the past, it was pretty common for people to decide to go 'to the movies' and then pick the best movie playing to see. Between the ever-growing price of movies and the ease of streaming movies at home within a few months of release, there are a lot fewer 'go to the movies' people and a lot more 'I will go to the theater for this specific movie but I will wait for stuff that's not really impressive on streaming'. I think that's the problem Supergirl is running into - the people who liked it don't give it any kind of 'this was a great experience that I'd hate to miss in a theater' rating, but rather stuff like 'it was OK' or 'it was pretty fun'. It seems to me like it's a pretty mid movie that might be fun to stream sometime but definitely isn't worth $50 for a full theater viewing - not a terribly flawed movie, but nothing to warrant 'watch this in the theater instead of getting a new hardback game book or dozen+ minis'.

The ceiling for superhero movies now is around 400 million.

The floor less than 150 million.

For the big budget ones anyway.

The exceptions to that are what I was saying. Superman (600 odd million), Batman, Deadpool and Wolverine, GotG3. All established stars or major MCU ones.

Captain America got 415 million. 180 million budget

$618, adjusted for inflation, so basically Superman (2025) numbers.

This. It's not that movies cost too much, it's that the experience is undervalued, probably becauseof COVID and streaming services. One of the reasons Obsession and Backrooms have done so well is that GenZ turned out for those young creators and they value the experience of seeing a horror movie in the theater.

I think you are vastly overestimated the reputation of Krypto. And Spider-Man is easily on the same tier as Superman and Batman. I should be going to bed so not going to dissect the rest of this list for the moment.

Absolutely Spidey belongs on that top tier list with Superman and Batman.

Green Arrow is another one that might be different now because of the long-running TV show, but I think the rest make much better sense than the prior list (though the X-book characters might have to move up a tick after not one, but two series of fairly successful movies involving them over the years).

So where do the X-men, Avengers, Fantastic Four (edit: just noticed F4 under C group), Justice League and other teams fall in there?

This list is for movies, and my criteria are box office and profitability: in other words, how much have audiences actually turned up for a film featuring that character/team. In this context, I'm not interested in their history in the comics, TV shows, t-shirts, whatever. This is a film ranking based on what they've actually done, particularly since the rise of superhero movies. Film quality is obviously a huge factor, so this list could look entirely different in another universe where those characters/teams were given different writers and directors, but that's a hypothetical.
