That's lying with statistics. Great book. Shows the fallacy of the argument, especially as there were multiple issues that affected the BO, and I don't think your supposition that she is unknown is one of them.
Relatively unknown.
Im using MCU as comparison. They used a string of successful movies as a lead in to their lesser known characters. Early MCU films were the B listers due to rights issues. They still can't use Spiderman and Sonys making money off him.
Not all B listers made bank though. Eg Hulk. He never got his own standalone after tgat 1 movie. Ironman was also a B lister.
MCU really blew up after The Avengers though .
If Hulk and pre Avenger Iron Man are B listers where would that leave Supergirl? X-Men would also have been B list before they blew up over successive successful movies imho.
Do you think Supergirl is on the same level as them before they blew up? She doesnt have the same pop culture relevance as them or Wonder Women. Combine that with a lack of momentum/lead in and overall superhero fatigue is probably the main reason. DC specifically has a the opposite problem of a string of successful movies as a lead in. Shes not Batman, Superman, Spiderman or Wonder Women. No one cared about the GotG either but they came post Avengers. She has been in some stuff so she's not the D team either.
Avengers adjusted for inflation made triple the recent Superman movie. Not a bad lead in if you're trying to elevate the rest imho.
Scarface will likely have similar issues. Cheaper movie and sub genre might save it. Objectively he's even less known than Supergirl (who tf is Scarface?).
