Superman: Still Awesome

I don't think anyone who was familiar with Superman from other media was ever going to gel with Snyder's take on him.

I feel like a lot of folks need to familiarize themselves with superdickery.com.

I found Man of steel to be an excellent superman but, I can understand why some don't. Outside the snyder dislike, a lot of it to me comes down to " I don't like the writer and what he's doing"

Which is funny because I think that David Goyer wrote MAN OF STEEL and he gave us both BLADE (1,2 & 3) and DARK CITY among other things. He also helped jumpstart the pre-52 versions of the JSA with Geoff Johns. So it's not that I don't like the writer or his work, but this particular iteration of Superman lacked the things that make the character Superman.

Synder's version of WATCHMEN is pretty good right up until the ending where it seems he misses the entire point of the story. And ironically his DAWN OF THE DEAD remake is probably his best film, and it was written by...wait for it... JAMES GUNN.

Oh yeah, Superdickery (as a concept) was a thing. And hilarious. Major props to the site for collecting all(?) in one place for us to enjoy.

But I'm not sure how much of it continues into any modern take on Superman.

Just saw this last week. I thought it was a good take. It all resolved a bit too quickly..... But I enjoyed the movie.

The point is that "Hope" Superman is a slice of a long history. It's no more the "real" Superman than "beating up bad landlords" Superman is the "real" Superman. These characters are constantly changing.

People that say Snyder's MOS is "a bad Superman movie" are defining it against an entirely subjective metric. And that's valid, but no one should consider it "true."

Most of those weren't particularly relevant to the character at the time either, since they're almost all just covers made to make people pick up the issue or gimmicky one off stories that basically don't matter.

I really think that was a studio directive and they found Snyder was sympathetic to their approach. I believe they even initially explicitly wanted Christopher Nolan to do Man of Steel in the same vein of Dark Knight and he passed. WB's execs at the time just didn't understand their properties or that Batman and Superman are very different characters.

Even during the silliest parts of the Silver Age, when Batman and Robin are fighting aliens on a giant typewriter, Supergirl is dating her horse and Superman is dating a mermaid, he was meant to be a fundamentally good guy.

But you have novelty covers and, well, societal norms that colored that approach. Him being terrible to Lois was some weird patriarchal nonsense on the writers' part, not them thinking Superman should be a giant sexist.

It was a Superman origin story. He was learning how to be a hero; he had never thrown an actual punch before Zod. Wasn't sure what to do with the power of a god, and neither was his dad...because duh. Nothing in our lives would make handling that easy.

I appreciated the updated and more "what would it look like today" aspects of Snyder's film. Very different from Gunn's film, to be sure.

Agree completely. But I do think there is a modern, general consensus on the character that Gunn's version hit on the head, and Snyder's version kicked in the nuts.

Me? I'd like to see something of the original, anti-captilalist, borderline anarchist Supes. But I consider this unlikely as long as he remains the IP of a large company. (i.e forever.)
