D&D 5E (2014) Tabaxi Feline Agility Question- How Would You Rule

the Jester

Legend
So the tabaxi Feline Agility ability lets you double your speed until the end of your turn. How would you rule in this situation:

A tabaxi starts her turn prone. She stands up, costing half her movement (normally 30'). Once no longer prone, she triggers Feline Agility ability and moves.

How much movement does she have at that point? 30' or 45'?

I agree with @AlViking. Speed is the 30 number. You are allowed to move up to your speed. The Tabaxi ability doubles speed, not movement.

Edit: On further thought. Had the Tabaxi used the ability before standing up, they'd only have 30 left. Using it after to get 45 might violate ROI, but that's a DM call. I could see a DM ruling that even though movement is now 60, standing up still costs half total movement. So ultimately, it's the DM's call in a rulings over rules moment.

Since D&D is silent on order of operation when dealing with halves and doubles, I'd rule PEMDAS applies.

The Tabaxi starts its turn prone. It uses feline agility to double its movement (multiplication x2) but then uses half its movement (divide by 2) to move from prone. It still has its full 30 ft of movement to move.

I have never used this or have someone that played one. It seems to be something based on you moving and not something like the Rogue's Cunning Action. I does not use a bonus action or limited to a number or times per rest or day and can be used every other round.

I'm not sure that order matters and if you stand and then choose to use this, that you should use it as another action of some sort. I would likely choose to say you have used half your speed to stand up and this only lets you move 30ft instead of the 45ft. It is not a big deal overall but there may be situations where it comes up.

There also could just be a power for this race that says you can stand up freely or you cannot be knocked prone or something that works for me.

Stand up for 15' and then move for 45'.

Standing up is such a nothing burger to me. Whenever it happens, it almost never matters how much movement they have lost, because they have no place to go after standing up where they want every 5' square available to them. And heck... in those few precious moments in the campaign when getting back on their feet and then moving as far and as fast as they can is such an important thing for that PC... narratively I will usually let them even make an Acrobatics check to "kip up" and only use 5' of movement and then take off running. If the story beat in that moment is getting back up and then beating feet... I'm not going to worry about the stupid movement rules to turn this cool moment into a turd by nickel and diming the PC's movement rate. What a waste of a potential cool scene.

Personally, I'd have them activate it before starting ANY movement, so 30 ft. (with 30 ft. have been taken up by getting up from prone, instead of 15).

It is 30 ft which is fair since it is still double that of a race who got 30' and only would have left 15'

As @Maxperson said, it doubles the speed not the distance. So in a normal situattion it could cover double the distance but:

It is prone -> it stands up twice as fast as a char without the gimmick (for whatever that might be good). But as @Remathilis said the total movement of the round applies and the order does not matter and it only has half of it left so it is 30 ft.

Countertest: If it has a normal round say it activates the buff before anything else to get to 60 ft.
2nd option it activates the ability after having moved 30 ft it also would not get 60ft, but just an additional 30 ft.

So that is clear as Klossbrühe
