[Table Top Wargames] General Discussion [+]

Most of the mats we use are either 34x22 and we often double them so 34x44. Occasionally, like th ebig game we had recently, we will use a "BFM" that is 4'x6'. The latter is the size of mat id use my mech scale dropship on.
This reminds me of Mechwarrior Dark Age Clix batttle we did. We put three 4x6 tables in an H configuration. Four vs four players. A wild afternoon.

Stretching the idea of "currently" to encompass the only once or twice a year I get a chance to play (Alas! Like @TheHand I have to live vicariously through @payn's reports...), that would be:

Battletech (I try for mostly Classic, but this year has been exclusively Alpha Strike at conventions)

Heavy Gear

A bit of vehicular mayhem (Gaslands most recently, also have Car Wars 6e, haven't played CW "Classic" in ages)

That said, I'm preparing some Renegade Legion: Centurion to run at a con next year! It's been a long time since I've played (though my interest in the universe has always remained high) and I'm looking forward to introducing others to it. Though I've been banding about many ideas for it for many years, I'll likely run it mostly as-is, modifying only the internal record block and using my + shaped diagram (and custom record sheet).

We played 6e and it's really fast and furious. car design with equipment cards was perfect for a beer & pretzel afternoon.

Last time I played classic car wars was in the late 90s. Had a group of 5 players who came to my house once a month for vehicular mayhem. I created unique scenarios with custom maps with objectives to score. Player couldn't win by staying outside combat and then win at the end by destroying the last opponent.

I've enjoyed 6e as well. There's someone still running classic at one of the local cons, in very old-school "taped-together paper sections of road with pieces of box carboard supported by boxes for bridges with flat paper counters" kind of way. Everyone playing seemed very into it. :)

That is very old school! We started using the turn template as soon as we discovered it. Next I bought Nascar micro armor vehicles. I won a con tournament with a tire shot on a guy going too fast in a turn. 😂

70 models added to my Pile of Opportunities! Seriously the game looks great!

Tonight we have a new round of what I named "Battletech Classic Mercanaries." Its a system where the players all have one mech and pilot who levels. The GM(s) run an opfor. Ill get some picks on how it goes.

Oh man, the turning key was a revelation. I still have a few of my home-made ones cut out of thick cardboard bought from an arts supply store (a side advantage of being in an architecture degree, the need to visit those frequently).

Also a revelation: Laser straightlines for LoS verification! Bought one a few years ago and it was so much "oh my deities, where have you been all my life???" No more kneeling by the table so that the minis are at eye level to check, or unfurling long strips of tractor feed paper (easiest way back in the day to get a super long foldable straightedge!) and casting a shadow to check. Now it's click and one solid beam of light of certainty. I had the Army Painter one but it wasn't well made and was glitching out, so I just replaced it with a super robust one that can throw a super bright green beam out even out to 60+ feet. Overkill? No such thing. :D
