Never played those.
In Frostgrave your main characters are your wizard and his apprentice. They gain levels with xps. The rest of their crew (experts and regulars) are hired with gold. You explore the vast ruined city of frostgrave and environs to find ancient magical items and loot. You have an HQ you return to after each game. There is no campaign map.Your wizards have a school of magic. It's possible to cast spells from other non-opposed schools but it's more difficult. It’s an opposed d20 system + Stats. The highest wins and scores damage equal to the d20 result minus armor. The vibe for me is more like old TSR D&D.

How would you describe the relative merits / feel of Frostgrave vs Five Leagues?

Frostgrave is a one-vs-one warband game that had solo rules added to it. It's light and fun. Easy to play. There is nothing going on in-between each mission apart from post-game death/injury rolls. Feels like a wargame.

Five Leagues from the Borderland is a true solo game, it's more immersive and uses a map you create following step before your campaign starts. The in-between mission phase is well developed. Feels closer to an RPG.

Today's progress: I started assembling the Asterians. The tiny arms on the Cyphers made me sweat! The opposite of the chunky Matsudans support.

They are very similar, but advancement is centered solely on your wizard and their apprentice, unlike Mordheim and Necromunda where everyone in your warband or gang gained experience points and advances and could have special equipment. Frostgrave also offers clear victory conditions for campaigns. which entails your wizard gathering enough spells.

Speaking of Matsudan, here they are in epic scale!

…along with Black Talons, a couple of specialist skimmers, and two HQ units.

Just the super-heavy and three walkers left to complete.
