Anyone been hearing anything in advance of the August 13 release of this?

Tales from Earthsea (2006)

IMDb shows it as 2006 with a release date of 2010, so something strange is happening with it, I guess. I see some text about LeGuin wanting the father of the current director originally.

I've seen the film; done by Miyazaki's son Goro. Unfortunately it's weighed down by cumbersome plotting. The animation is still gorgeous but the story resembles little of LeGuin's work, and she has publically slammed it.

I watched it, but it was hugely disappointing. It merges a few ideas from "The furthest shore" with some pretty substandard stuff. A few of the visual images are nice, but it was such a missed opportunity. Le Guin was probably right to allow Hiyao Miyazaki to tell a story in Earthsea, but Miyazaki should never have let his son do it.

It's better than the Sci-Fi channel drek, but not particularly good IMO.

Cheers

I had high hopes for the pairing of Studio Ghibli and the Earthsea novels, but the film is plodding and lifeless.

In a tangentially-related note, my wife and I just watched Ponyo, and it's charming.

Le Guin was probably right to allow Hiyao Miyazaki to tell a story in Earthsea, but Miyazaki should never have let his son do it.

I recall reading that Miyazaki had originally approached Le Guin, trying desperately to get the rights from her, and she turned him down. It was only after he became more widely known outside of Japan and had massive hits with Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away that Le Guin finally offered/asked him to adapt her work. At which point, Miyazaki basically told her to shove it. Er, well, he declined more politely by saying he'd lost interest in doing the project. And that's how it fell into Goro's hands.

It's a shame. Guess it'll be another decade or two before anyone gets another shot at adapting Earthsea.

Would have given it a shot, but it looks like Disney is letting barely any US theaters run this. So far, I've seen one theater in NY that has it, another in LA, but none in Chicago .
