Tell me about Savannah, GA

About two months ago I asked for help running a modern game in New Orleans. Well, the group has finished up with the Big Easy, and now they're on their way to the weirdest city on the east coast, Savannah.

I'd like some help bringing the city alive to the players.

I've been to Savannah several times before, more than I had been to New Orleans, but in N.O. I had a lot of plot stuff tied into one character's background, so that helped keep the action going. Also, it was Halloween, so I had a ton of material to work with. In Savannah they're going on a mission, and so I want to make the location dynamic and interesting.

In particular I'm interested in ghost stories and places that might make for good modern stealth missions. In the setting, Savannah is the home office for The Bureau, a men in black-esque organization that keeps magic a secret. Also, there's going to be an art dealer who has connections with the Egyptian pantheon. Aside from that, I don't have much planned.

Help me out, please?

I have been to Savannah a lot and lived for several years in the Charleston, SC area (which has its own atmosphere). If you want to ask any specific questions, you can email me at dgmiller@sccoast.net . In the meantime, I will try to come up with some things that may help.

I don't really have anything specific in mind. I'm looking more for flavor.

I've been to Bonaventure Cemetery - cool place. I also know of Colonial Cemetery, but I never went there. I've been to lots of the squares in the historic district. I've been to Tybee Island. I've gone to a good number of buildings of the Savannah College of Art & Design, and I know that the art students there range from professional (Illustrators) to geeky (computer art folks) to kinda depressive folks like my ex-girlfriend (sequential art).

People say lots of buildings are haunted. Even a few of the dorms of SCAD are apparently haunted. I toured one historic building and on that tour they did not mention the ghost who lives there, even though it was prominently mentioned on the actual 'ghost tour.'

I know there's a whole other side of the city that revolves around Old Money, and that there are a lot of strange people involved. Rich old Georgians who do things like set money aside in their will to pay for their butler to keep walking the dog after the dog's owner dies, so that the butler ends up walking an empty leash even after the dog dies so he can keep getting paid.

Do you have memories of the city you'd like to share? Interesting things that might be happening in early November?

No, I haven't even seen the movie of it. I don't know how I managed not to. Jessie (my ex) was so durned in love with Savannah, but she never tried to get me to read it.

The book is great and a very fast read. The movie is just so-so.

Mostly all I remember from Savannah (havn't been there since I was a kid) is that it was really hot, really humid, and lovebugs were everywhere. Little bugs that join together in erm... marital bliss and fly around like that. Whenever anyone mentions Savannah, all I can think of are all those bugs. The bugs, man, the bugs!

I smell a fiendish hellwasp swarm coming on ...

I've been there once that I recall, to visit a friend. The airport seemed a lot bigger than it needed to be; I could've sworn it only had six gates, but the building was pretty big.

Of course, it was late, I was tired, and kinda irritated that my friend wasn't waiting for me at the gate. So, make of that what you will.
