That low magic progression table?

Ktulu

First Post
Hi all:
A while back one of the WotC team (I believe it was Mike Mearls) posted a progression for playing 4e without magic items. I failed to copy it down or remember where it was located; does anyone have it or a link ot it?

Thanks in advance!

It's just the properties of a magic weapon, armor, and neck-slot Defense booster item at each item level: +1 to hit, damage, AC, Fort, Ref, and Will Defense, and +1d6 damage on critical hits per 5 levels.

You could juggle it up a little--after all, the magic-item progression assumes that PCs will have some items ahead of their level and some lagging behind. If you felt industrious, you could probably break things out into an every-three-levels progression and come up with a few different progressions to choose from (i.e. a "savage brute" progression that gets the weapon bonus faster but lags on AC and Defense, a "clever defender" that gets Defenses faster, etc.)

Huh..I thought it was more spread out. Well, that works great, Thanks!

Spread it out the way you want I'd say.

Just keep in mind that every even numbered lvls all your stuff is getting up by 1.

An example:

1st lvl = +1 to hit
2nd lvl = +1 damage
3rd lvl = +1 to all Defenses (except AC)
4th lvl = +1d6 on criticals
5th lvl = +1 to AC
-------
6th lvl = +1 to hit
...and so on

When do the bonuses kick in? At levels, 5, 10, 15, ... Or at levels 2, 7, 12, ...? Or at level 1, 6, ...?

Per Mearls's original post...

+1 to attacks, damage, and all defenses at levels 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, and 28.

Waiting until 5th level is too long, doing everything at 1st is too quick.

Actually, yeah, that's a good point, the game expects people to probably have those +1s around third level or so.

Heck why not just give the group the list and say that at each level they get to pick one. So the striker might boost damage while the fighter boosts AC.
