The Best Bagel ?

Well, time for my first thread ever. I inadvertently started to talk about 'bagels' in the 'donuts' thread. My bad.

So. What do you like on your bagel ? Tomatoes, tuna, salmon, chicken, fried onions, nuts, pesto, mozzarella, mushroom, all seem like valid choices ?

Poppy seed definitely. Any type of cheese sounds like a good choice as well.

I admit I had to look up 'lox', but 'salmon' (hope I got that right) in any way shape or form sounds like a good idea. And of course the cheese sounds good.

Without turning it into a full sandwich, I've always been a fan of butter for a topping.

Turning it into a full sandwich, tuna salad is excellent, salmon with onion, tomato and capers is excellent. A BLT on a bagel is excellent. Montreal smoked meat and yellow mustard is a St. Viateur classic. As is their marinated eggplant, lettuce, goat cheese, sun-dried tomato and pesto sandwich.

As for stuck to the bagel itself, the rosemary and sea salt from St. Viateur is a standout. Sesame, onion, and poppy seed are all excellent options. Best kept separate, though, the Everything Bagel is a sometimes treat and can easily go too far.

If I'm out of reach of the NYC bagel mafia, who take a very dim view of bagel shenanigans, a jalapeno and asiago bagel, toasted with butter.

All of which sound good, and thanks for the mention of the 'red onions', which do not seem to get enough love in general.
