The Best Bagel ?

Whether its here at home, camping, or business in San Diego, NJ, LA, DC, or whatnot, my go-to bagel is Sausage, egg, and pepper-jack on something in the jalapeno or jalapeno-cheddar family or other hot-pepper and cheese family.

On days I'm going to have a heavy lunch a cinnamon and sugar on buttered plain is good too.

But, but, but.. Doesn't that technically make it a 'donut' instead ?

Sorry, did I post this in the wrong thread again ?

<insert mock horrified look>

It seems less sweet than like a strawberry cream cheese would (and like the cream cheese the cinnamon and sugar go on the sliced part) and is a lot more firm and filling than a donut. It's more like cinnamon and sugar on toast.

Of course now we're only a month and a half from the state fair and my mind has drifted to a funnel cake with cinnamon and sugar. That would be more like a donut :-)

And my brain obviously wants me to avoid the work I'm supposed to be finishing before I head out for the day, and hence my overly serious answer here.

Also, the bagel place on campus is closed, but I could drive by a Dunkin' on the way home... mmm. Donut.

Bagels Forever has been a Madison institution for decades (since I was, like, 4 years old). I pick up their frozen bagels at the grocery store, but getting them fresh at the bakery is even better. Their chocolate chip bagels are sublime.

Some places to get Jalapeno (or Jalapeno adjacent) Bagels if you're on the road (alpha by city):
  • Clemson SC - Sully's Steamers at 511 Fort Hill St. [Jalapeno-Cheddar - they're steamed, but when you're in the heart of darkness you take what you can get]
  • Columbia SC - Carolina Cafe and Catering at 925 Sumter St. [Jalapeno - and the platonic form of iced tea.]
  • Indianapolis IN - Sidedoor Bagel at 1103 E 10th [Jalapeno Cheddar - maybe not every day? , no seating]
  • Los Angeles CA - Sandcouch Cafe [Jalapeno - got the last one when we went there, so not sure how well stocked they are]
  • San Diego CA - Spill the Beans Coffee and Bagels at 813 W. Harbor [ Serrano Habanero & Jack Cheese is a bit spicy, but good]
  • Washington DC - Bagels Etc. at 2122 P St NW [Had Jalapeno and Jalapeno-Cheddar last time! Cash only ]

In Memoriam
  • Lawrenceville NJ - Maidenhead Bagel [Closed in 2019, apparently they retired :-( ]

Any suggestions for getting them in Toronto (going next April) or around Chelsea in Manhattan (going in November)?

Montreal bagels - thinner and sweeter than the usual NY ones, boiled in honey water before baking - are very nice but do go stale very quickly in my experience. Cream cheese and smoked salmon for me.
Many years back the sales manager, where I worked, would get a care package from our Montreal office that was packed with bagels from Schwartz Deli. Good stuff. A little cream cheese and done :)

I use bagels in all the same ways I use sandwich breads, but also open faced with a variety of toppings, including especially the classic lox, red onions & cream cheese, with or without butter; with or without capers.

I’ve also used Boursin and herb-crusted bries as substitute for cream cheese.

I tend to favor everything, onion, garlic or egg bagels almost exclusively. I absolutely will not eat bagels that incorporate fruit or cinnamon.
