Cake donuts in general just haven’t been my thing with the exception of “old fashioned” donuts with the extra crispy outside. Those suckers are heaven.
I like blueberry cake donuts, and apple cider ones if a place has them, but otherwise yeah. The only real advantages cake donuts have is that they dunk into things without falling apart and they keep better, if you wind up needing to eat them the next day.

There's a place near me that has outstanding old fashioneds (they call it a cruller because donut terminology is weird and varies), I should get one today.

Edit: I did not get that donut, because Krispy Kreme has apple cider glazed donuts atm and I should not eat more than one donut a day.

Crullers are a thing I’ve only ever seen at Dunkin Donuts and they are god awful there. But I have heard of them!

The thing about crullers is that there's more than one donut that gets called that depending on where you are. Growing up, a cruller was basically a light donut that looks like a tractor tire but in California they can also be a butter milk old fashioned that's got a crunchy exterior and a fluffy interior. Some places even sell both. The former are almost always disappointing but the latter are very good.

Went to Duffin’s Donuts, a Vancouver classic, run by a Cambodian-Canadian family for over forty years. We had the buttermilk doughnuts - one lemon, one raspberry. They were delicious.
