even in the badlands, they could farm around the scarce water sources, but since this is a medieval level economy, it's subsistence farming with the toughest of crops. Hear me out: the Dark Lord was a bad dude, no doubt. Complete monster. BUT, he really, really liked good food and it is rumored that deep within his fortress is The Rack Of Infinite Spices (guarded by a Gastromancer Lich, of course).

Look at several post-war countries in the days before "reconstruction supported by the victors" was a thing. Focus on the losers or the countries that were used as battle grounds. WWI Germany. WW2 Japan. The period following the collapse of the Soviet Union could also apply.

But not Napoleonic France unless you have a Talleyrand. That guy totally breaks the curve.

wherein the Orog awnshegh Ghuralli is attempting to unite the monsters clans into a new Kingdom so he can reclaim the Giant Downs and strike down the human Rjurik settlers who are also encroaching on the area.
The PCs come to lead the humans, defeat Ghuralli and claim the title of King of the Giantdowns.

Celebrations continue for quite some time, and there is much work being done for the reorganizing of society. Freed of the dark lord's influence, the land enters a period of recovery and renewed fertility, although certain features which made it attractive as a base for the dark lord's purposes persist and can serve as loci for the reemergence of evil.
