Has this always been the case, or has it just become something that I've noticed much more over the last few years. Do people in general not understand the difference between the words wary and weary? I know that they kind of look and kind of sound similar... I guess... but they are NOT at all the same word. I'm shocked how mainstream mixing them up has become in the last 5-10 years. I never once saw it before then, now I see it more often than not.

I do not know about stupider, but I wonder if spellchecking and the near disappearance of copy editing on much online articles has an impact?

Spell check has definitely gotten worse in recent years. Speech to text and predictive text can also be really bad and often people don't bother editing.
