It's a strange choice, but I think that Andy Serkis will find a way to do the idea justice. We'll have to see.

My absolute favorite Serkis picture is an obscure UK slasher film called The Cottage. Serkis and Shearsmith absolutely elevate what would otherwise be little more than a bad, C-tier, horror movie to an absolutely enjoyable black comedy worth repeated viewings.

It's not a trilogy. It's one of two standalone movies. The fact that they're not doing what they did to the Hobbit and stretching it into a trilogy is a good sign. And the fact that Serkis said yes and is heavily involved also helps.

I could see this be about Smeagol's backstory and/or Sauron's forces hunting him down and capturing him.

I'm (very) cautiously optimistic.
