Spoilers The Mandalorian and Grogu

I liked it. I thought it was a great season 4 for the TV show, while also being accessible to people who only had a vague familiarity with the TV show. Very happy to see Star Wars that didn't require homework. Very happy to watch Star Wars that's actually fun.

I did find it a bit exhausting towards the end, with the X-Wing cavalry arriving seeming like just perfunctory, tacked on extra action in an already long action sequence ("target my location"... why?), but whatever, it wrapped before my patience was exhausted.

As every reviewer seems to want to say it wasn't "necessary" for whatever that's worth. Fortunately I highly enjoyed it, which is the point of entertainment, or at least this sort of entertainment.

But yeah, if you're actually tired of Star Wars and only see Star Wars films out of some sort of sense of obligation then this "unnecessary" one will probably just irritate you. If someone is in that boat I urge them to realize that they are allowed to just stop following Star Wars; clearly lots of people have since it took until Monday after the opening weekend for a spoiler thread to emerge on a website that had like three other Star Wars related threads active. The general Star Wars discussion thread had much more to say about franchise novels from decades ago last time I checked.

I don't know, maybe I'm just wrong. I thought it was good, and I didn't realize my opinion wasn't the consensus one until I read reviews over dinner afterwards. I should perhaps mention that I have an unlimited movie pass at my local theater chain, and in order to get economical use out of it have trained myself to not require popcorn, soda, or such, so unlike most people these days I don't enter the theater feeling gouged and put out and am probably easier to please than a lot of people.

My wife's observation: "Needed fewer special effects and more acting." I'd say better dialog writing: why would a Hutt refer to himself as a "man"?
Hey Droid what is the Basic word for "Nek"? (Nek being the word for male in huttese).
Droid: That would be "man".

If your using a specific language, why wouldn't you use the word in that language that means what you are trying to say? Every other word in the alien language of huttese should be translated to basic but not the word for males of your species?

And if we are caught up in the word man vs male....just chalk it up to a bit of slang. No one uses any language 100% correct, ok so he said man instead of male...he clearly got his point across.

I haven't yet seen it, but I probably will as a Tuesday matinee.

Timing seems several years too late. Had this come out and been a bridge between season 2 and season 3, I think a quick popcorn flick side quest would have been great.

I'm not sure what to expect given that both critics and fans appear to agree that it's not particularly good.

Why not "Hutt"? Why not refer to your own species? The gender reference isn't the point, it's the species reference.

We rewatched the original film just a few nights ago. It's still amazing. I'm sad that Star Wars films aren't even really event movies anymore. I have zero interest in this one. When it's free I might get around to it, but it seems like a chore.

I was a bit underwhelmed. For me it never really exceeded the best moments in the TV series, which might be a bit unfair as I think the series set a high bar. There are lots of enjoyable moments, but it never really felt greater than the sum of it’s parts.

It feels like a side mission rather than the main storyline, which works well I guess for people that haven’t seen the show. But, as a fan of the show it felt like watching a double episode of the series, which is funny as I’d always felt the TV show felt cinematic to begin with, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing, just something I had to get my head around, if that makes sense? (Just as an aside, I’ve always felt that the double eps of Star Trek : Next Gen were better than the actual movies that came out)

It’s funny to me that the Mandalorian has now had the two best directors ever involved in Star Wars, (Herzog and Scorsese) but both were in front of the camera instead of behind it. That said, I really liked Scorsese’s cameo in the film.

Grogu and the practical effect puppetry that brings him to life on screen are the highlight of the film. I loved the part where Grogu is left by himself to save Mando. This felt like the main character development of film, after Mando still doesn’t trust Grogu and treats him like a baby that needs protecting we get the roles reversed and are shown that Grogu is capable of looking after Mando when needed. Which also echos the young Hutt’s need to be seen as his own person and get out of his father’s shadow.

Overall I had a good time, even if I felt it was missing something.
I’m super keen for Starfighter next year.
