Trailer The Odyssey full trailer

Yes, some of the dialogue and tone suffered. Gimli, for example, made into comic relief worked for entertainment but distorts the character. Similarly, the addition of self-doubts to Aragorn and an impulse to resist his destiny, the manufactured melodrama of Elrond not supporting Aragorn's relationship with Arwen, and of Arwen and Aragorn giving up on each other, distorted those characters. Similar distortions were made to Sam and Frodo.

It's hard to say whether a more faithful version will ever be made. Obviously making films this big is a huge logistical challenge.
Perhaps then the gold standard of an epic in terms of faithfulness is the 1st season GoT more so than LotR?

I think the implication was that the self-declared purists are not actually purists. Most of the people complaining have not a clue about the Odysee. They complain about the armor, not realizing that the correct historical armor would not look as badass as they think, but clunky and goofy. They complain about the use of "Dad" in the trailer, but not about them speaking English dialogue instead of old-greek verse. The racist ones complain about a black Helen, but not about the fact that all the Greek heroes are played by pale Brits/Americans with most of them look not even close to a Greek/Mediterrenan type.
Okay relooking at your post as you feel I have misunderstood it.
What is your point of a purist not complaining that it is not in old-Greek verse but complaining of the use of "dad"

It feels very much like the typical throw away excuse with fantasy shows where if someone complains on a scientific/logical basis, the argument is very often - but we are talking about dragons or elves or starships. As a GM, players will often argue realisms in my games which usually provides a benefit for them in the game, despite the game being liches & phylacteries.
So in the same vain one can argue that the dialogue of dad/daddy maybe jarring - they need not be familiar or request old-Greek verse.

I mean if we have Travis Scott mumbling through his dialogue with an inner city accent and throwing ever so often a you know and a like - it isn't going to work for me. I mentioned upthread the personal issues I had with Thor.
Dude believes oral poetry is analogous to rap...okay...could we not have gone with Donald Glover instead?

Distortions from the novel, sure, but I generally think it's a mistake to think of characters from film adaptations as the same characters from the source. The Aragorn of the films is a different character and, as you point out, one that works better in a film. I think the vast majority of Jackson's changes were improvements, in the context of cinema.

I also don't think he went far enough with altering Frodo and Sam's story: RotK would have had a much more powerful ending had they died together on Mt. Doom, having sacrificed themselves to save Middle Earth. Gets rid of the deus ex eagles and of the multiple false endings that make the end of the film so ponderous. But I think that would have been a step too far for most fans of the books, and probably for Jackson himself.

In the context of the Odyssey, I don't have any concerns about fidelity to the source material, just about whether it looks like a good film. Given that the Coen brothers have already made the near perfect adaptation of the Odyssey, it's a high bar.

I have only superficially looked at the differences online.
Did the dialogue feel wrong to you? Or the tone, because of these gratuitous jokes?
Do you feel it was faithful to the material as it will ever be in this medium?
i am wondering how often do you go to the movies or even watch movies?

I'll always cite the visuals of LotR as done right, but ironically Jackson and the other writers made a bunch of not really needed changes to the plot and characters in those movies. Many of them clearly done for reasons of pacing and because they didn't have a lot of faith in audiences' attention spans, adding sometimes gratuitous jokes, suspenseful moments and jump scares.

Still great movies, though.
LotR was visually cohesive in a way that many directors, costumers, and cinematographers could definitely learn from.

The end point of this is that the whole movie should be Greek and Turkish actors. Which, OK, but I don't think that's what most people are actually asking for. And if they're not, where do we draw the line and why?
That is what i would have liked. Hollywood likes to reduce everything to resemble American racial dynamics. Why not give some actual Mediterranean actors a shot? Does ethnic representation matter only if it corresponds to a box on an American census form? That said, Matt Damon is just as poorly cast as Lupita. But if it’s not striving for historical accuracy (which, as noted, is difficult with mythology) then it doesn’t bother me much. The bigger problem is that Nolan is a hack who gets by on spectacle and a legion of rabid fanboys; so it will probably be terrible anyhow.

I'm not the biggest Nolan fan but..."a hack who gets by on spectacle and a legion of rabid fanboys"? Hard to take you seriously. Are you sure you didn't mistake this for a Zack Snyder thread?

Nolan's films are all technically brilliant. For my taste, his writing is his weakness, but he's still better than most. Objectively, it's impossible to label him a "hack" if you know anything at all about filmmaking. You might not like his movies, but he's not remotely a hack.

Im more interested in its box office. Solves a lot of interwebz arguments.

Mando movie
He Man
Super Girl
Odyssey

These 4 have * beside them in terms of flop or not.

See how it plays out hit or miss.
