Games and stories are very different things to me. A story is one way a situation could go, if the characters make certain choices and events play out in a particular fashion. I'm not running the game to tell a particular story, just to present a world for the players to explore through their PCs.
It is not about any particular story or about forcing outcomes, it is about making the stuff around the PCs more full of potential for interesting than is strictly speaking realistically plausible. I don't know about you, but I want interesting stuff to happen in my games most of the time, and real life just isn't like that. So I need to stack the deck in favour of interesting.
