The conversations in this thread prompted me to start reading the Dragonlance books. I researched the setting and reviewed the existing modules last year to run a game, but I have no preexisting history with the books.

I was hoping for audiobook versions because I have some other paper books on-deck (my copy of The Tapestry of Fate comes in this week), but when I checked the audiobooks there were comments that the text gets abridged.

But, I do have about 30 Dragonlance EPUBs that I bought in a Humble Bundle last year. I'm not sure I will read all of these, but Dragons of Autumn Twilight is here, so I'm starting with that. Currently on Chapter 5 as I began reading yesterday.

Update on this:

I am currently ~60% through War of the Twins. Reading the Legends material is very interesting because I don't think any of this was covered in the modules. So basically this is new to me, I didn't know any of this stuff with Raistlin and Caramon and Crysania happened. I have Fistandantilus as a warlock patron in my game. I knew he was a famous wizard. He appears as a demilich in one of the modules. Then I got to Legends and started reading and ... But I really like how the book is handling the outcome of that fight between him and Raistlin, which is essentially to torment Raistlin with the possibility that he is just a confused Fistandantilus.

I think Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame are the next major books after Legends. I checked through my EPUBs and for some reason I have Summer Flame, but not Second Generation. So I suggest that if they're going to release an omnibus, they do that in the next 2 months or so when I start reading those. Just for me, right?

I am glad you like the later books.

I enjoyed them, I thought they were good, and im never good at judging quality vs just whether I like a book or not.

It is just that the books took the characters and setting in a direction I didn't like, which happens, happens in many different series whether books or TV or movies.

But when something like Destinies comes along, gives me something to latch on to say that the books I didnt like are in an alternative timeline now, and now the new timeline may go in a direction I do like. A pure emotional response, but it is there nonetheless.

How is it that you run the Dragonlance Nexus and your a Dragonlance designer but you think a post Legends Dragonlance world is more exciting than the Chaos War... which is probably the most interesting thing in Dragonlance

I think we can agree that different people have different tastes. Likewise, one's tastes evolve over time.

I dearly love the Knights of Takhisis (aka Dark Knights aka Knights of Neraka) as villains. I love villains who learn from the past.

When I first read Dragons of Summer Flame, I hit it with a lot of anticipation. I loved Second Generation, and here we are seeing the Dark Knights on the offensive. I may even have been rooting for them! I read the book in 3 days. I'm a slow reader, so that was a huge feat for me. And yes, I cried a bit when Tas died.

Just prior to Summer Flame, I ran a Dragonlance campaign in 2e with the Dark Knights. This campaign eventually became the War of the Darklance alternate timeline.

All these years later, I'm a different person. I have grown as a writer and creator. I began to see flaws in Chaos. A big fiery giant whose only goal is to destroy things. Yawn. Sirrion fills the goal of a fiery god of chaos (little C) and he fits that role better.

I think it's still a good book. I enjoy it. I do realize, though, that it doesn't quite live up to its potential.

I started reading the Dark Disciple but I put it down. I wanted to be part of this community but I think it's too hurtful. I think I'm going to put Dragonlance down for a while. At least for the next month. I'll pick up War Wizard when the time comes and see how it feels. But for now I think it's best I step away

Dragonlance rocks! Feel free to take a break but I hope you come back! There is so much good stuff for the setting! I think I read pretty much every DL novel available back in the late 2000s and reading those are some of my fondest memories.

Dark Disciple is an amazing trilogy btw.

if you enjoy the books, keep reading them. There is nothing wrong with you liking them, just don’t expect everyone else to do so as well.

You will find some people that like X and some people that don’t in any sufficiently large group of people. Hang out in any given topic here and you will see this.
