The WOW method to monsters? Would you hate it?

I've been hooked on WoW espically since out group decided to take a break away from RPGs until the summer was over. I've been thinking about the monsters and how they are protrayed in WoW vs. D&D. What I mean is that in D&D say Gnolls pretty much dissapear after 6th-10th level. In WoW the Gnolls grow in level with you as you go to different areas. It always bothers me that certain low level monsters drop out of the game (D&D) after a certain level. However the WoW method seems to wreck with the "reality" of the game. Would the WoW system bother you in D&D? Would seeing a tribe of 12th level Gnolls utterly bug you? What is your opinion?

Monsters do grow as you go from level to level. You just add class and prestige classes to them. For me, this is a necesssary part of a campaign long run as it allows me to establish hierchy in societies.

Or, you can do it the easy way and add hit die to them as well. I prefer the character class approach. That's not something from WOW though. I've seen that also in EQ2 and in all of the Final Fantasys. Especially the earlier ones where the only difference between a imp at 1st level and 20th level was a color swap and boatload more hp. Final Fantasy XI Online was really good as there were really only three or four societies of monsters and as yo ugrow in level you encounter the hierchy.

So long as there was a reason for there to be 12th-level gnolls out there, and they were there since the beginning of the campaign, I wouldn't be bothered by it. Perhaps these gnolls are the chosen of a demigod or something, and have evolved beyond the common garden variety.

But just wandering around and finding gnolls that always happen to be my level would annoy me greatly. It'd mess with believability too much for me.

D&D does this. There are rules for advacning monsters with hit dice and with class levels.

I agree. once you establish a hierchy and explain why they are there there should be no reason for it.

I don't like "Tribes of 12th level Gnolls", but I have no problem with a 12th level Gnoll who is the leader of a tribe.

i.e. The 12th level PC is the elite of his society and he is fighting the 12th level Gnoll who is the elite of Gnoll society.

Hmmm... back when there was an edition wars forum on Dragonsfoot, one of the cheif complaints of the 3e haters was that there was the capability to add class levels to monsters. As if only PC races were good enough for classes and levels.

Personally, it's what sold me on 3e. :)

Outside of some good explanation of why they exist, it would probably annoy me some. I think it boils down to the fact that your players will become invincible from some monsters eventually no matter how many of them there are, and how much that bothers you. If it doesn't bother you then then there really isn't a need to improve the Gnolls, because the players are suppost to plow through scores of them. If it does then you probably want to modify D&D some or try another system.
