THRILLING TALES - Pulp for D20 - What do you want to see?

Pulp Heroes vs Cthulhu Mythos.

I started to work on something like this ages ago and got as far as certain pulp digests and radio serials being slightly altered factual accounts of missions undertaken by a secret, government-funded, agency. Said pulps and radio shows were used to generate additional funding for said agency and, additionally, provided a great cover for field operations (e.g, if an agent who looked suspiciously like, say... The Shadow were captured in Nazi Germany, he could eaily be dismissed as a random nut). I worked up a brief timeline, as well, but never got much further due to other stuff cropping up.

I still think that it's a valid idea with a lot of potential. I was approaching it from a modern day standpoint of these heroes re-emerging to pass on the their mantles to others for a coming battle with Mythos entities and their followers, but the pulp era of the organization would be rife with potential for adventure, as well (perhaps moreso). I like the idea of pulp heroes being real, as well as human (thus susceptible to the rigors of aging, and needing to pass on their mantle to a younger generation).

I think it would, at the least, make a swell mini-setting for THRILLING TALES ;)

[Edit: Incidentally it was a short story penned by Robert R. McCammon that inspired the idea - a story that I believe you may well be familiar with, given your character contribution to Jared Sorensen's The Code. Night Calls The Green Falcon.]

Planetary Romance...

The pulp genre of planetary romance, or sword-and-planet, is woefully under-supported by RPGs, despite being a classic and well-loved genre. Many gamers can remember the stories of Edgar R. Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series, or John Norman's Gor novels, or even Ken Bulmer's Dray Prescot of Antares series (written under the pseudonym of Alan Burt Akers). I'd love to see more D20 work done that supports that genre.

Only an opinion, of course,
Flynn

One of the releases we're planning is called LOVECRAFT D20, actually. We originally conceived of it as a way to support the defunct CoCD20, but realized that given the fact that Lovecraft wrote for the pulps, it would dovetail nicely with THRILLING TALES. We are thinking of it as a bit of a sub-line -- a main release, and then some adventures.

As I mentioned in another thread (which talked about IRON LORDS OF JUPITER, the Polyhedron mini-game from a couple of years back), we've got the designer of ILOJ, Lizard, currently working on a project for us called MARS, which will be a full-length D20 game, designed to be used with either 3.5 or the D20 Modern/Future rules, set in the planetary romance genre. The Red Planet awaits!

It's not going to be a THRILLING TALES release, though -- it's getting it's own line....and will be available in both print and pdf.

Very cool!

Woohoo!

Sounds great! Do you need a playtester? ;)

Thanks,

I would like to see some more adventures. Possibly one set in Shanghai or Hong Kong.

I know this is far-fetched, but I really enjoy pulp settings on a college or university campus, because they make such great stepping off points for all kinds of adventures as well as being a permanent base for characters. Miskatonic U is one of my favorite supplements for CoC. Another fictional university setting would be terrific.

Your Thuggee and Nazi supplements were great. Something along those lines would also be very welcome; maybe one about the Illuminati?

I second that - I've been toying with the idea of using the Illuminati in my d20 Future campaign, and any treatment on them from you and your crew would be an excellent starting point for extrapolating them into the future.

I'd like to see mini-settings, probably. I mean, I can probably cobble together my own Tarzan/Doc Savage/Buck Rogers hybrid, but if I have lost civilazations, globe-trotting organizations and villains, strange technological gizmos (both gee-whiz inventions of modern man and lost and ancient "Atlantean" secrets or whatnot) that I can plug and play with, I'll be a lot more excited.
