Time for character gain a level

First Post
Whats the appropiate time to a character gain a level, i think its reasonable to a character evolves every 2 - 3 ( even 4) game sessions. But every Adventure Module or similar thing i find let the characters evolve 1, even 2 levels in the same adventure.

Is that fast or what i think is reasonable is too slow?

I calculate xp as follows:

Find the party's average level.
Calculat xp needed to get from party average level to the next level.
Divide that xp by 4.
Divide that by # of party members and that's the XP for a CR = APL.

Example:
4 party members of levels 3,5,4,4:
APL = (3+4+5+4)/4 = 16/4 = 4

XP to get from 4 to 5 = 5000 (it's easy next lvl * 1000)

5000/4 = 1250

1250/4 = 312

This would make it take 16 encounters of their CR for them to level.

I adjust this up and down by taking (CR-APL) * 100 and adding that to the CR.

I also build slowing into the formula so that the higher your level the slower you progress, but that gets complicated quickly.

Spread Sheets are a wonderful thing.

Adventure != Game Session. They can last for several, so it's OK if they move up so fast.

And with the standard combat XP awards, without bonus for roleplaying, an average party will gain a level every 13.3333.... average encounters. Depending on the number of "average" encounters per session the party will level-up every 4 sessions, or faster or slower.

Also, using harder or easier encounters, adjusting the standard XP awards, giving out additional XP for roleplaying, and the number of players in the party will change that number of course.

Some of those adventures will take far more than a single session, even if you play long ones. We spent a long time finishing Heart of Nightfang Spire. I don't think we got very far into Speaker in Dreams on one session either.
