Today I learned that Solarpunk is a thing.

It makes me retch. All that joyful positivity for the future - gross. Apparently I’m not happy unless there’s a miserable dystopian future, or failing that a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Really? I think Star Trek is hopepunk-adjacent and I don't find that fundamentally implausible societally. But it does have a nuclear war and war against the genetically engineered to get there.

I think the issue is sometimes that hopepunk doesn't really seem to do the legwork to get to how/why people would do better. But equally sometimes it does.

So you know how many names have masculine and feminine iterations? For instance, "Alex" and "Alexa", or "Julia" and "Julius"?

Well, look at "Oliver" and "Olivia" and you'd think they'd be one of these pairs, right? But you'd be completely wrong.

Olivia means, basically, olive.

Oliver, on the other hand, has nothing at all to do with olives.

The "Oliv" part is actually an evolution of the "Alf" we see in "Alfred", which means elf, and the -er means army, so Oliver is actually elf-army.

Alexa is a different-but-related name in that it's not an abbreviation, but a complete name. But again, Alex is a gender-neutral name. You cannot assume an Alex is male. You will be wrong often.
