It's a podcast about preparing for and surviving the end of the world, but from a left leaning liberal view point. More about working as a community and less of the "I got mines. You." mentality. I don't know what to think of it just yet. I'm just getting into the first episode. I'm just glad I'm not alone in thinking this way. A lot of what you hear is about protecting yourself and what's yours because everyone else wants what you have. This podcast likes to believe that isn't how it'll work out. Getting the message out there that working together is better is a good way to start.

Years ago I read a piece about prepping and surviving the zombie apocalypse. It made pretty much the same point. You have to sleep sometime. Really nice if some trusted folks can be on watch while you sleep. Or when you get sick with a cold or something. Even the vaunted Mountain Men of US frontier fame came to trading posts to swap beaver skins for new knives and other supplies. The Boy Scout motto is Be Prepared. But in most cases, you are a Patrol member and the Patrols are part of the Troop and the Troop is part of a larger community.

Individuals die. Communities survive. Even Preppers are generally part of a group, these days.

But bootstraps and rugged individualism and freedom and masculinity and and bootstraps!!!!

I have been a firm believer in a rising tide lifts all boats. Working together makes the work easier. Why work against each other. I'm not going to be a lot of help with manual labor. But what I would be a lot of help with is tending to the hurt and sick and teaching others. I'm not a medical professional but I'm better than nothing. And I have a mind for learning.

Some believe if you're not working hard then you're hardly working. People are lazy and will take what you have instead of working for it.

Once you can get past the stuff directed at weekend warrior equivalents there's plenty of discussion of trying to find people with necessary skills you're missing to create a viable survival group. And the role of negotiation with other nearby groups for longer term events.

Hence why my friends say that they're heading to my house, in the event of a zombie apocalypse; leatherworking, chanimailing, making bows from scrap PVC pipe, tool jig building...

In a zombie apocalypse- or any close analog- my family is doomed. Too few people with too many windows in our house to be defended.
