Too many feats!

Is it just me or does there seem to be just too many feats in this game? It seems like there are feats for everything! I've always been partial to having the characters being able to spend some xp, time and gold to learn a feat (without actually using a feat slot) while some feats can only be gotten by taking a feat in a feat slot (they seem to be more campaign affecting). Does anyone also do this? Something different?

I think that there are a) not enough feats, and b) not enough feat slots. I am constantly looking to 'fix' (a), and (b) I 'fixed' along time ago. :)

Options

I'm not saying that there aren't (or shouldn't be) alot of options. But I'm just not crazy about them all being feats. In the Legends and Lairs "Path of" series (Path of Faith, Path of Magic, Path of Shadow, Path of Sword) they have the option of the character spending time and money to attend a school or university and earning certain options by completing lessons. They are'nt big options that would throw off a campaign but tend to help define a character a little better and/or give him a tiny boost. I just wish there was more of that in the game, that's all.

I think the problem is creating a new feat is easy.

Creating a brand new subset of rules to expand a character's abilities outside the box, however, is a lot harder to balance and write so that it's easy to understand.

That being said, I like the idea of more options (not just more feats)... the trick is doing it in a good way :)

A couple players have been asking me to run a game and want to use 3.5 (which I haven't played or DM'd in a while), the first rule I made for the campaign was

CORE RULES ONLY

No splats, no setting books, no supplements with new PrCs, spells, etc.

So yes, I agree. Too. Many. Feats.

One DM I play with uses an "attribute point" system. Every level after 1st you get 1 AP. You can trade 3APs in for 1 bonus feat, or you can use them to improve your attributes per the point buy rules (going from Str 13 to Str 14 would cost 1AP, going from Str 17 to Str 18 would cost 3APs). I usually save them for bonus feats :)

I see nothing wrong with a lot of feats.
But that doesn't mean you should just allow every single one.

A lot of options are a good thing, but with a lot of options comes a good chance of exploits or narrowly focused PCs.

Just make sure that every feat that a PC takes is kosher with the DM.
And if it happens to be a balanced feat that screws over the DM's plans, then it's time for the DM to adapt as well as the players.
