So, I have a long relationship with this book. If you're going to do more than make a movie out of it (apparently a new, extremely faithful one is in pre-production right now), you will need to pad it out.

It is also devoid of women entirely after the Admiral Benbow sequence, so I can see why they'd have mom stick around, especially if you have Hayley Atwell for the role.

And real life piracy was way more tied up with slavery than we'd like to think, so making Long John a Black man is a pretty cool choice.

I'm not so sure about the other changes, though.

Having a big slavery subplot feels like someone read Under the Black Flag or another good popular pirate history book and got more excited about doing that than adapting Treasure Island.

And Jim having the map in his head and making that a big plot point and being extra-emo about it also feels unnecessary.

And the biggest thing the book has going for it is not knowing whether to trust Long John, even after he's revealed to be a pirate. Apparently taking that ambiguity away and making him a full-on villain feels like it's robbing the story of a lot of its narrative power and is, frankly, a bad look when you make Long John a Black man.

I'd say I will watch this anyway, but I am certainly not paying for MGM+ (lol). When it eventually ends up on Netflix or Prime, I'll catch it there.

I do hope I'm wrong and this is a stellar adaptation, though. It's a really solid book and deserves to shine.

I love Treasure Island! One of the things I love about it is it doesn't need to be padded out. It's just pure adventure from beginning to the end, with very little wasted space. Just balls-to-the-wall action!

While watching the trailer, I thought, "Yeah, you can't have an adventure series devoid of meaningful female characters these days." Like The Hobbit trilogy, I'm sure the expanded and/or new role of a woman will markedly improve the story.

Oyelowo played Bass Reeves, so he's okay in my book. And yeah, real life piracy was tied more to slavery than a lot of people like to admit. Sometimes former slaves could become pirates and sometimes pirates just treated them as cargo and sold 'em off.

I was stoked when I saw the trailer but less enthusastic once I watched it. At its heart, Treasure Island is supposed to be a boy's adventure and it looks like they've forgotten it. Tom Sweet is a grown man. Though I suppose modern audiences don't want to see a 13 or 14 year old boy threaten to blow someone's head off with a pistol. I don't expect any adaptation to be 100% faithful, whatever that might mean, but they've made enough changes that I'm not really interested. I'll pass.

It's weird to think that Muppet Treasure Island will likely turn out to be the more faithful version of the story.

Why do you say "forgotten", rather than "*chosen to do something else"?

You're right, they chose to do something else. In addition to padding out the content because there's not enough for 6 hours of a series, I wonder how much of it is just writers wanting to leave their own mark on a piece of work?

Nothing fundamentally wrong with that, my two favourite adaptations of the novel turned Ben Gunn into a robot and a sow respectively, but something about this trailer does feel like it's adding complications and changes for the sake of it.
