I was stoked when I saw the trailer but less enthusastic once I watched it. At its heart, Treasure Island is supposed to be a boy's adventure and it looks like they've forgotten it. Tom Sweet is a grown man. Though I suppose modern audiences don't want to see a 13 or 14 year old boy threaten to blow someone's head off with a pistol. I don't expect any adaptation to be 100% faithful, whatever that might mean, but they've made enough changes that I'm not really interested. I'll pass.
People forget, but the Hobbit was a children's story.

The Lord of the Rings, though the children were a little older, was also a children's story.

The Silmarillion (or what became the Silmarillion) was the adult story/stories. The publishers wanted more of a children's story and sequel to the Hobbit rather than Tolkien's adult material.

However, the movies were definitely not targeted towards a child audience.

One could say the same thing about them.

In regards to Treasure Island, another series expanded on it greatly (and sometimes clashed to say things counter to what the book said). Black Sails was even less of a child's series than the Lord of the Rings was!

That seems unkind.
I really wish you'd expand if you think something I said was unkind. I think a lot of writers who work on adaptations have some desire to leave their mark, sometimes to the detriment of the final product but sometimes for the improvement. I don't think anybody would have liked Kick-$$$ or Wanted if they were faithful adaptations of their original comics.
