"True Dungeon?"

Browsing Ebay's RPG listings I ran across this, a "True Dungeon" token that has been bid over 400 bucks! WTF is "True Dungeon"? I'm assuming some kind of LARP thing, at least from a quick Google search.

So what's the deal? If it is such a big thing why have I never heard of it? Is it a cult? And why are people dropping four C-notes on a little piece of wood?

I'm confused and mildly frightened.

It is something ran every year at Gen Con. It is pretty popular and the tokens serve as magical items and you can gain XP and collect rare items to be more powerful.

I'm one of the few people that did it once and hated it. So, my opinion on it is obviously not good but plenty of people seem to like it.

But 400 bucks, Crothian, 400 bucks for a little wood disk that you could probably make for a few pennies...what's up with that? :D

People have too much disposable income? After looking at what it does maybe they think that getting more treasure tokens is worth it in the long run.

I know when I bought a beta Time Walk for Magic the Gathering there were plenty of people who looked at that as ridiculous. In fact I would be one of those people at this time.

I think True Dungeon is about the only LARP that I was interested in playing, but I heard that in addition to the price of Gen Con, a ticket for this event is around $35 (Is that correct?) If that's the case, pass on that.

That price sounds about right. My friends and I planned on trying it out, but once we saw the price we played Star Wars d6 instead.

Star Wars D6....now that's a game I can really dig into. I have around 33 books. I own the SAGA version, but......d6 version scratches that Star Wars itch for me....

Oh, back on topic, yeah, $35 for True Dungeon sounds too pricey for me. Should I ever go to GenCon, I'll probably pass on the game and save my $35 for the dealer's room...buy some out of print Star Wars d6 supplements. ;)

The True Dungeon is a lot of fun. I think it's worth the money. I do think that the tokens are going for ridiculous prices, though. I think the demand for tokens is feeding itself. Tokens are so expensive that people are buying them so they can get more tokens to sell.

I know I went through the True Dungeon this year with a guy who I happened to play with last year as well. He only plays the Rogue because then he's the only one who is allowed to disarm the chests. This allows him to carefully walk over to a chest while other people are trying to figure out the puzzle in a room, disarm it, get the token from inside, and walk back to the rest of the group without saying a word.

It was rather annoying. There was even a t-shirt given out this year for anyone who went an alternate route in the dungeon and chose extra treasure tokens in exchange for unleashing a nasty monster against the rest of the party. He got that shirt. He knew exactly what would happen, since it was his 3rd time through the dungeon.

But other than dealing with people like that, it's a lot of fun. I probably wouldn't pay for it if it wasn't at GenCon, but I spend a little bit extra once a year to experience stuff you can't get anywhere else. And there really is nothing like it.

I did it once and thought it was just ok. Me and a buddy tried it a few years ago - we were grouped with some other people we didn't know (need a group of 6 if I recall). I'd consider doing it again if I knew everyone in the group. Teamwork is fairly important and one knucklehead can definitely spoil it for everyone else. $35 is a lot to spend for a random grouping.

I agree though, the Token market is insane.
