I've read quite a few threads about the new Unearthed Arcana Ranger Revised Primeval Awareness. But I have a question about how this ability works underground.
Things that are clear from the forums:
1) You only get types (e.g. humanoids). You don't get subtype information (e.g. orcs).
2) The distance information you get is rounded to the nearest mile, so it's of limited value as a "short range radar" of what's in the next room.
My question is how does this work underground? Imagine you're in a dungeon crawl with humanoid enemies in all directions. Do you get an exact count of each monster group in each direction? How detailed are the directions? Could you effectively map out an entire monster landscape with this power?
Also imagine you're at a tunnel intersection NSEW and you don't know that after 100 feet, the north tunnel goes down and loops back south for 200 feet. Say down that tunnel are 100 orcs and your ranger can detect humanoids. Does the ability work more like "locate object" and tell you the 100 orcs are south of you? Or does it work more like "tracking" and tell you the orcs are down the north passage?
Thanks for your help!
