Unearthed Arcana UA subclass second chances

Some thoughts on elemental sorcerers

These really demand to be published as a set of four, yet weirdly, 5.0 only ever got one (Storm). A general "elementalist" sorcerer is very bland, and really just boils down to choice of damage type. Having four separate subclasses allows you to lean into the theme much more. For example Phoenix adds rebirth and bird themes to simple fiery destruction, Earth/Stone suggests immovability and resilience, etc.

It's worth noting that "Phoenix" is an elemental titan in MMotM. The other elemental titans could inspire the other elemental sorcerer subclasses.

The Critical Role inspired Fathomer Warlock in 5.0 combines a water theme with GOO elements. And really overlaps too much with GOO patron. Could this be repurposed to make a Leviathan (water) Sorcerer subclass?

Generally, browsing through this, there are a number of abandoned or neutered (divine soul) sorcerer subclasses which are considerably more interesting thematically and/or mechanically than current offerings (e.g. clockwork, demon). I do think WotC should do some searching through their archives for things to revisit. The element themed sorcerers were clearly held back by the idea that they couldn't possibly give them an expanded spell list!

Personally, I would also like some of the more flavourful warlock invocations revisited.

Divine Soul is the only sorcerer subclass that interests me.

Ranger 2014 had, in my opinion, good flavor that needed better mechanical support, and instead of giving it that support they would both times drop it entirely in favor of something that I'm less interested in, leaving a mechanically improved but ultimately poorer class.

I did not like the Tasha’s Ranger,
I can understand that. The revised ranger had more of a "nature" feel (with more typical ranger like things). A friend of mine who absolutely hated her experience with the original 2014 ranger did change to the revised ranger and finally started to enjoy playing it since it was not as weak anymore. I don't think they can bring that ranger again, especially with how they dont expand classes.
but it was less bad than the 2024 Ranger.

This is something I dont understand, why do hate people so on the 2024 ranger?

It is really just Tasha's but improved. The only part which one could say is worse is the Level 20 ability (which is awfull in 2024), but the 2014 one was also not that strong.

  • Favored Foe in 2014 the end is just a slightly different hunters mark, needed because at level 1 Ranger had not yet spellcasting. It does not need a bonus action which is nice, but it scales worse than Hunters mark (only once per turn the 1d8 over 1d6 does not help) only is for 1 foe and cant be switched to another target, and also needs concentration the exact same as hunters mark. (But without any non combat addition)
    • The 2024 favored foe feature also is just more elegant, instead of creating a slightly different hunters mark you just give hunters mark uses and let the spell be used. And with the new 2024 ruling you can also use this hunters mark + a spell in the same turn.
  • In 2024 just having spellcasting from level 1 makes things in general more smooth on that level
  • Starting Equipment is also better at level 1 with Studded Leather (and Short sword + scimitar instead of 2 short swords for weapon mastery)
  • Weapon mastery level 1 is a huge upgrade to the ranger (like to many other martials)
  • Level 2 is the same (except the switch of deft explorer to level 2 from 1)
  • Level 3 the Tasha's Primal Awareness is not needed because the Ranger is now prepared caster AND has more spells prepared early level (and hunters mark is the only fixed one), so this is more flexible and more elegant than specific extra spells. Also Rangerd can now cast Rituals!
  • Level 6 Roving gives 5 feet more extra speed in 2014
  • You trade the more situational Land's Stride (level 8) and Nature's Veil (level 10) for 2 expertise on level 9 which is more general, but still fits a Ranger well.
  • Tireless on level 10 is a bit worse, because it scales with wisdom not proficiency.
  • Level 14 Nature's Veil is a combination of the 2014 Level 10 Nature's Veil and the level 14 vanish.
  • You get small free upgrades level 13 and 17 (where before you did not get anything) to your Level 1 spell (your plan B).
  • Capstone is bad in 2024, but 2014 is a bit better but also does need concentration (but no bonus action). It is now simpler, but definitly a bad Keystone (but again the one before was also not that good).
Ok I guess people expected more changes, but the 2024 Hunter has improved the originally bad level 1, got as all martials the new weapon mastery, gets a more streamlined Favored Foe (which is a sidegrade but at least has also some non combat use), has more flexibility in spells, and is else pretty much the same, level 13+ he gets 2 free small upgrades to an early spell. The only annoying thing is that capstone has similar problems as before (week and needs concentration on a suboptimal option.

I liked the old fiend summoning spells. Less you control the fiend, and more you let them lose while hiding behind your circle. Maybe not the best spell for PC's, but a nice one for NPC's (until the PC's figure out that they can open the NPC to attack by the fiend by damaging the circle). Maybe for PC's, if you upcast it, you can make the fiend stuck in one spot like a guardian of faith.

Its not that its weak, or that it hasn't improved at all. Its just that it is so reliant on a single, badly-scaling mechanic, that locks out other fun things that you could use. If you don't use Hunter's Mark then it is weak, but if you do use Hunter's Mark, it stops so many more interesting options that the class has nominal access to.

People look at how much some other classes have improved, or maintained their capabilities, compared to which, the Ranger design seems . . . clunky.

The problem with the 2024 ranger is that it’s built around Hunter’s Mark, and Hunter’s Mark uses up your concentration, which make so, so many ranger spells useless. The playtest version performed well because it didn’t require concentration there. But the published version still requires it, and they didn’t remove the concentration requirement from any of the other ranger spells either. So you’re stuck with the choice of either not using a huge chunk of your spells, or not using a huge chunk of your class features that revolve around Hunter’s Mark. Also, a lot of features from the Tasha’s version got replaced with just more spells, when personally, I really don’t want a Ranger to be casting spells at all.

The beauty of the Hollow Warden Ranger (Ravenloft) that was just published was that it provided an alternative, non-concentration use for Favoured Enemy (and the "free" Hunters' Mark castings).

But Ranger did improve in Tashas so its quite natural less improvement was needed and also Tashas Version needed concentration for their damage feature and that one brought less damage (once per turn).

Also it is not built around Hunters Mark if you ignore the capstone. It has Spellcasting, extra attack, one of the biggest power budgets in the subclass among all classes. It literally did not loose anything compared to Tashas. Its a half caster like the paladin, that one has also no "damage feature" (1 free casting of smite vs your up to 6 free castings of hunters mark which get slight improvements on levels the paladin get literally nothing except new spell level).

Also if you compare the improvement to other classes like the fighter it looks quite similar: Fighter got more non combat uses of its ressources and more mobility and weapon mastery. Also it has to choose most often. Does it use second wind for skillcheck or for healing or for movement. Sometimes you get movement and healing but often you cant have everything.

Ranger got exactly the same. You have ritual casting and more flexible casting, you dont need to use spell slots for hunters mark so you can use them easier for non combat spells, you got weapon mastery and more movement speed on level 6 and you must choose between hunters mark or other concentration.

Before level 20 Its not more built around hunters mark than the paladin is built around the 1 free smite they get on level 2.

And yes you have choices, you need to choose between hunters mark and other spells thats great. Choices make the game fun. And with this choice the Ranger performs well! So with a concentration free hunters mark it would be too strong and it would not be a choice you just always so it so it makes it less interesting.

The paladin also needs to choose between using the bonus action for the 1 free casting of smite and using other spells. (He just does not get upgrades for it)

Also the only feature from tashas which was replaced with more spells is the level 3 feature from Tashas which granted fixed spells and the Tashas pseudo hunters mark (which also needed concentration even thiugh it was no spell) was replaced with real hunters mark. All other Tashas features are there. The level 10 and 14 "sneak" abilities were combined, but they were not from Tashas.

There is really nothing Tashas makes better except that its weak Pseudo Hunterd mark did not need a bonus action.
