Im starting to write my new Undermountain campaign. Made me think of hooks to get my current party down there, Years ago I came up with some hooks. There was some generators around then so I may have gotten some from them. But lets have a discussion on goals that your PCs would go into UM. Heres my list.


  1. PC's are exiled to Undermountain and seek to wreak havoc and retribution on the City of Waterdeep and Lords
  2. PC's seeks to apprehend and villain who has fled into Undermountain
  3. PC's are seeking a long lost artifact rumored to be in Undermountain
  4. PC's are hired by a wizard to retrieve a monster/Spell components from Undermountain.
  5. PC's are taksed to destroy a foul evil which is besieging Waterdeep from the bowels of Undermountain.
  6. PC's are treasure hunters
  7. PC's are trying to exorcise a demon from a family member or friend who lairs in Undermountain.
  8. PC's are trying to recover ancient lost technology
  9. PC's must destroy the warforge buried in the depths of Undermountain
  10. PC's must wind to the world clock of time (time stop)
  11. PC's must destroy Halasters Clone factory
  12. PC's must destroy a coven of vampires
  13. PC's must close a portal which threatens to unleash an alien pantheon on Waterdeeep
  14. PC's must destroy the burgeoning Shadow Thieves guild in the depths of Undermountain
  15. PC's are charged to excavate a long lost library in UM
  16. PC's must retrieve a netherscroll
  17. PC's must collect the footprints a leprechaun
  18. PC's must find and route out the source of Brownie (tiny fey folk) accosting Waterdeep.
  19. PC's must seek out a long lost Spelljammer and Helm from Undermountain.
  20. PC's must save a Couatl.
  21. PC's have been geased.
  22. PC's must retrieve a friends corpse
  23. PC's must infiltrate the Xanathar Thieves guild
  24. PC's must break up slavers operating out of Skullport
  25. PC's hunt down and kill a specific monster
  26. PC's must accompany a bard into undermountain so he can compose an epic movement
  27. PC's must accompany a bard into undermountain so he can find and play the organ of Lum the Mad to destroy an ancient evil, demon/devil.
  28. Repent a fallen paladin
  29. Plant the tree of life in Wyllow Wood
  30. Destroy the Psion Stones
  31. Find a loop hole in a devils contract
  32. Deliver a joke to a copper dragon imprisoned in Undermountain. Make him laugh, but he's currently sad
  33. Map the ways/gates in and out of UM
  34. Destroy and artifact by feeding it to a rising phoenix
  35. Deliver a ancient message to the unborn
  36. Soothe the savage beast
  37. Indulge an angry titan
  38. Prison Break
  39. Repent/Atone/Exorcise the soul of a gold dragon dracolich (Tricked by Cult of the Dragon)
  40. Capture the tear of a demilich
  41. Feast on the soul of a demon
  42. Stop an impending horde
  43. Discover location of the Mercanes vault
  44. Right what once went wrong
  45. Get Marco Volo to admit he's a fraud
  46. Counter the dying scream of a banshee which takes the form of a lost dirge that echoes the halls of Undermountain
  47. Remember tomorrow
  48. Restore a medusas beauty
  49. Sabotage a Yugoloths base of operation from which it sells arms for the blood war
  50. The PC's are key players in an all out warfare taking place in Waterdeep, Undermountain & Skullport.
  51. Fly in the face of the gods
  52. PC's must crash the meeting of the gods at the Valley of the gods, deliver message
  53. Turn peasant into king
  54. Sacrifice their souls for the greater good/evil, ensure neutrality prevails
  55. Stop the death of Mystryl, the ascention of Mystra (the god of Magic).
  56. Sing a lullaby to an awakening Tarasque in UM
  57. Pit and dull the keen sword of a Death Knight
  58. Blindfold a beholder
  59. Shine the crown of the dwarf king Melarkyn
  60. Draw water from a long dried well
  61. Complete the Mummy kings tomb
  62. Capture the harvest moon
  63. Kill the Waterdhavian werewolf in Undermountain
  64. Defile the headdress of Malar (the god of the hunt)
  65. Out drink a long dead dwarven king
  66. Iron Chef Undermountain-Out cook the Hungry Hungry Halfings
  67. Sever the wings of Angels
  68. Destroy the blackball making its way through Undermountain.
  69. Convince a Red Dragon to give up his horde!

Lord of the Hidden Layer
The PCs somehow owe a favor to a creepy magic-user. He wants the secret to immortality - as a Worm That Walks. Lore says that one of Halaster's apprentices discovered this secret. Negotiate with them (if still alive / undead / otherwise-extant) or plunder their records (if not). The apprentices each took control of one layer of Undermountain, which became known as 'XYZabode'. For an extra complication, the PCs may not know which apprentice they want.
