Yeah, and a world tour too. I'd like to see that, but he hates Buffalo since someone threw a M80 on stage and blew Nicko McBrain off his drum stool for the Somewhere in Time tour. So, chances are slim to none he'll come through these parts unless he plays Darien Lake.

Apparently, there's a lot out there; in the last 39 years I've met about 100 people who claim to be the person to lob the M80.

Down is great, I loved Nola and II. Saw them in 2007 and 2008. The 2007 show was fantastic, the next one was pretty bad, ironically very low energy, Phil seemed like he was drunk. Down III was OK, it had a few good songs, & I pretty much checked out at Down IV Pt 1.

Same here. They always put on good shows, I've never been disappointed by them. I skipped the Blaze Bailey records but liked everything up until Dance of Death. Brave New World is when they started writing more prog-type songs with more 6-9 minute ones per album. They are good records but everything from A Matter of Life and Death forward are hard to get through from start to finish.

Saw them for the Clash of the Titans tour in 1991 for Rust in Peace. The bill was Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Slayer, & Megadeth. That was one of the best concerts I ever saw. I saw them again in 2010 and the played the entire RIP record. It was the Town Ballroom which has 1000-person capacity. Excellent show as well.

I don't work anymore, don't go out to bars and don't see a lot of my old friends too often so I don't hear a lot of new music these days. The local radio stations are terrible, so I don't bother listening to them. Every once in a while, I find a new band I like.

You are spot on! I pen down 1-4 and after Nola? Eh, just not as good. Nola is classic!

On maiden. Did not follow with blaze but my brother kept buying their stuff and dance of death and others are quite good.

Side note: my daughter likes maiden and she got and autographed picture of Bruce Dickinson for her birthday. My brother met him and. For it at a fan event. So I did my part for the world of metal teaching the kids right! Ha!

I have slowed down a bit…I have kids so can’t be running around bars discovering bands and it’s a little sad. In grad school we were in a town with music in every other building in town it seemed on the weekends.

Oh to be a young adult again! But I always have good tunes in the car at least…and have a slayer coffee thermos which is really amusing. They can commercialize anything!

This conversation has been fun. People dragging me down memory lane and I have fun remembering!

He was getting a drink when he said someone came up behind him and asked him for smoke, turned out to be Adrian. I think Bruce Dickinson was playing there

Yeah, all the epic songs that last 8 plus minutes does get tiresome. Plus I miss the aggressive nature of the older albums. The bass and drums, which used to be so dominate, have gotten meh.

Nola can’t be beat for my money. The later albums just did not have the songs where to Nola is up there in terms of great metal albums. Pretty precipitous drop off after.

They got another coming out…fingers crossed for more Nola goodness…we will see

Ever since Youtube, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. everyone wants to stream music when a few people are hanging out and everyone argues about what to play, skip from band to band and song from song. Heaven forbid you want to play a full CD, let alone new music. It's gotten to the point when I have people over I don't even want to listen to music anymore. That's why a lot of those CDs I only listened to a handful of times. I'll have to pull them out when I have time to kill.

They got another coming out…fingers crossed for more Nola goodness…we will see

I hope it's good too, but I think anything after NOLA suffered because the band was considered a side project and it always felt a bit disjointed.

I was in law school in Austin in the early 1990s, and worked/participated in SXSW a couple times while down there. Got to hear & see a LOT of great music in many genes. Some bands were booked into venues smaller than their buzz warranted. One such was Helmet. I went to see them, but couldn’t get in. But they were loud enough that I could easily hear them in the street, facilitated by the club keeping their doors wide open.


There were also some great SXSW performances that heralded bands right into obscurity. A Dallas based band called Wylde Peach (sp?) absolutely killed their set in a 2 story club. Think of RHCP and FNM, but more to the funk side, a la Fishbone, when all 3 were making a big noise. Everyone I talked to expected them to explode after their SXSW show. But they already had a reputation of being unprofessional, so nobody signed them. (They eventually relocated to Atlanta, where they became OutKast’s backing band.)

One of my favorite “second tier” thrash/speed metal bands was Metal Church. “Watch The Children Pray” hooked me IMMEDIATELY.

While MC soldiered on with a new vocalist Mike Howe.

The history of both bands after that is full of lineup changes, good music and sad stories.
