I know AI is a contentious topic in this space, and that's completely fair — if it's not for you, no worries at all, feel free to skip this. I just wanted to share something I built in case it's useful to someone here.
Vate is a free tool that acts as a Dungeon Master for D20-compatible tabletop games. A few things about how it works:
It's built on a local language model (Ollama/Llama), so I'll be upfront: response quality is genuinely a step below something like GPT-4 or Claude. What you get in exchange is privacy and zero ongoing cost — nothing you say to it ever leaves your PC.
It's early and has rough edges. I'm not here to oversell it — genuinely looking for people willing to try it and tell me honestly what's broken, missing, or just not useful in practice.

- Runs entirely on your own PC (Windows), no cloud, no account, no subscription — your campaign data never leaves your machine
- Narrates scenes and voices NPCs, with a personality that stays consistent across sessions
- Keeps a persistent campaign sheet (party, NPCs, active quests, session notes) it references while running your game
- You can feed it your own homebrew notes or setting docs and it'll use them when relevant
- Responds with natural-sounding voice, not just text, and can listen too (push-to-talk)
