Illustrator Jason Bradley Thompson announced yesterday that an upcoming book from Penguin Random House and Ten Speed Press will feature a collection of humorous isometric maps celebrating classic dungeons from throughout D&D's history. Thompson has produced many of these maps over the years, and this 80-page collection features not only the best of his maps, but also new artwork, a foldout map of the Sword Coast, and 'snarky but accurate' information on the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. The book is called Dungeons! Illustrated Maps Of Classic Dungeons & Dragons Adventures, and will be available on April 27th, 2027 in hardcover for $30.

The dungeons covered include:
  • The Moathouse of Evil (outside the village of Hommlet)
  • White Plume Mountain
  • The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
  • The Underdark
  • Ten Towns
  • Hold of the Storm Giants
  • The Tomb of Horrors
  • Barovia and Castle Ravenloft

Heh. In my recent Out of the Abyss campaign, I was slowly revealing one of these maps for my players to show where they had been. Funnily enough, it actually matched pretty closely to what actually happened in my campaign.

This was probably a no-brainer of a product that should have been in the pipeline ages ago; glad to see Thompson's maps get some love. I haven't read them all since I hope to play more of these classic modules than I have, but I've been tempted by a few of the posters on his site over the years. Nice to see this.

I think nostalgia is at it's apex right now. The original roleplayers are in their late 50's and early 60's now. That is the income sweet spot. Still I am attracted to this book.
