Warcraft Forever

I have still never played World of WarCraft. Forever might be an entry point someday if I ever get around to it. More interested in the new WarCraft III content for sure, though I am not sure I want it enough to break my soft ban on buying American games. Maybe it the vein of what Umbran was saying I am still hoping for a WarCraft IV someday even if it just consolidated and updated the stories of WarCraft I & II campaign wise.

I suspect they are watching the new War3 campaign's sales pretty closely, either to release more content that way or to gauge if there's sufficient audience for War4.

Between the new War3 campaign and a lot of what they're doing for Forever, it seems like they're really interested in telling some untold stories between War3 and WoW retail. (Forever is going to be permanently WoW: Year One, apparently.)

I really like a lot of the systems they're using in this, and I suspect a lot of these will migrate to retail, if they work out.

Last names (FINALLY!), although they aren't unique, which means you can have the real world phenomenon of having a bunch of people out there with yours.

One "server" for each type of game -- PvE, PvP, RP and Hardcore -- although they explained that the game will dynamically try to mostly show you players who speak your same language, are geographically near to you and around your level, so that you get the benefits of a local server but not one that ever empties out as the game ages.

The choice to turn off transmog for yourself and everyone you see. So you can not see your character dressed in a clown suit of random gear but instead your sharp curated outfit (the real endgame) or you can turn off transmogs, especially in PvP, and see who's rocking high end PvP gear and who's actually a scrub you can kill pretty easily.
I am definitely interested in WoW Forever though I wasn't interested in WoW Classic.

I am trying to remember the last WoW Retail game that I tried. It may have been Shadowlands. I'm not sure if I made it past the initial set of "action-packed" quests in Shadowlands before I decided that it wasn't for me. Legion and BfA were the last expansions where I had fun, moreso Legion, but I loved the Allied races feature of BfA. Big fan of the Dark Iron Dwarves, Nightborne Elves, and Zandalari Trolls. But it's always so aggravating to log back into WoW on your characters after so long and your entire action bar has been removed due to some big update. And now you have to relearn everything. There is not really any good onboarding for returning players with older characters. There is a lot about Retail that looks fun and interesting, especially as someone who loves the look of the updated Quel'thalas, but the sheer amount of content to catch up on can feel astronomically overwhelming.

So I think that this has fueled some of my interest in WoW Forever. Right now it's being framed as almost an alternate timeline in Year 0 of WoW. I would not mind if it was committed to being an alternate timeline that expanded beyond just being forever trapped in Year 0-1 of WoW. Like give me a WoW where we have Blood Elves without flying to Outland or having to wait until Cata before we get playable Goblins and Worgen or BfA before we get playable Dark Iron Dwarves.

Shadowlands was a car crash even before the pandemic hit. The good news is that everything since then has been vastly better, due to the new management team. They also have worked hard to make catching up pretty easy, with a new walk-through questline in Arathi Highlands to get you up to speed on the status quo and then feeding you into the new stuff.

If you start a new character, it's even easier, as your leveling will take place in the post-Shadowlands expansions and you will only get fed the lore you need to know.

In the case of Midnight, it's that the Void is coming for the worldsoul inside Azeroth -- sort of an unborn Titan -- led by a shoeless trickster being.

That said, I do think Forever will be a lot easier to jump in to, although I also think retail WoW is pretty amazing right now. Hard to go wrong either way. I wouldn't count on ever getting blood elves, though -- that's largely what the skyborne are doing: giving each side high elves they can tweak to look how they want (more or less) and fill a similar niche.

There probably is a chance that they'll show a year one version of Silvermoon one day, but it's likely to be pretty depressing, as the Scourge will have just gotten through with destroying everything.

The modern Silvermoon in Midnight is amazing, though. Next time they have a free to play weekend, you should pop in and see.
