[Wargames] General Discussion [+]

The place talk about the table top wargames you are currently playing. Doesn't have to be with miniatures. Hex & counters games, wood blocks, are perfectly fine. It's [+] thread try not to do 'editions wars' or 'badwrongfun' games.

TALON GMT: Is the one I played twice in May. Capital spaceships battles, recreates the feel of Star Fleet Battles, without the thick rule book. 80% the info for the ships is on a large 2" hex counter. The other 20% is on a handy cheat sheet. Erasable markers are used to track the info on the ships. I own a 3rd reprint box.

It's easy to learn the Power Curve, Movement Impulses and Turn Rate system, but mastering it and having your ships in the right place at the right time is hard - and part of the fun. For our next game in June we will use the advanced rules. Have you played this game?

Battletech.
Sci-Fi future where war is waged across star systems via mecha. More future militaristic than anime.

Currently, have a pretty active local group of 20-30 players meeting at several different FLGs during the week. Various game modes of simple open play, campaigns, tournaments, RPG.
Very cool. I own the newish starter set, and played Alpha Strike. Do you play with the full rules or Alpha Strike?

Im a Classic Battletech player, but I do run Alpha Strike a few times a year. We have healthy communities of both here in the twin cities. I find folks usually choose one or the other. Alpha Strike is a larger force quicker game that has more in common with modern wargames like Warhammer 40K and such. Classic is much more granular more about the unit level and old school wargaming. Some folks do play both, but its a small faction IME.

To sum it up;
Alphas Strike tells the story of the 13th regiment.
Classic Battletech tells the story of ever single member of the 13th regiment.

Some new sculpts coming from Iron Winds Metals for Battletech!
Are the new models metal or have they switched over to plastic?

I am also a big fan of the old school BG Diplomacy. Dont currently have a group though im working on some of my local friends. Favorite way to play is online with 24 hour turns. Comms done via email.
Diplomacy is a great way to end a lifelong friendship in a few hours.

I don't play a whole lot of war games these days, but I've got a lot of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare miniatures painted up and a few Warhammer 40k armies. I'd like to give One Page Rules a try just so I have something to do with all the miniatures I own.

You should, I played both the Sci-fi and Fantasy versions. It's a fun system. You can play with just One (1) page of rules or you can play one of the three other versions that have more pages.

"This rulebook is divided into 4 sections:
• Basic Rules - Everything you need to play the game, with plenty of diagrams and examples.
• Advanced Rules - Extra rules that you can use on top of the basic rules to spice up the game.
• Total Conversions - Rules that radically modify the base rules and provide a new experience.
• Additional Content - Extra content that is available on our website, added here for your convenience."
