[Wargames] General Discussion [+]

That is the classic model for minis and rules pre the D&D era. In the old days the rules were sometimes printed for free with the idea being that the minis were the real product.
Citadel started as a 'D&D compatible miniature' producer in the UK. Sales were okay, but they hit on the idea that if they created a fantasy game with multiple units of orcs, goblins, elves and men fighting each other, they would sell x10 more of each model.

Free rules to sell miniatures is still very much a thing these days. That is how Corvus Belli rose to prominence with INFINITY. Free PDF of the rules and army builder. But you have to buy the books to read the evolving fluff of the setting.

It's going to be a summer of group wargames for me. I'm not the GM for the RPG group and my solo gaming mojo is not working.

On the assembly, priming and painting table for the Summer. WWII 28mm British and German for Chain of Command 2e, Battle at Balin's Tomb terrain, Core Space crew for Five Parsecs from Home and Romans for Clash of Spear or SAGA Age of Hannibal).

X-wing ins interesting it was like a societal collapse-level event. Popular everywhere and then suddenly nobody playing anywhere.
Yeah it was kind of spectacular. Me and my friend used to play and enjoy the first edition, then they started making OP stuff, then they made a second edition that was too expensive to switch over to, then it was gone.

In the war game (not board game) category, which game does the best 'fantasy RPG battle' simulation according to you?

For me, 2d Delves does a great job with wilderness travel events and battle events. The characters have a very strong D&D vibe, but the system uses 2d6.

The other one is Fistful of Lead Might & Melee, with the Magic book and the Monster book. The random dungeon generation, with a theme is well done.
