D&D General Weapon that cancels Exalted, Fiendish, & Undead Restoration?

Ive tried giving similar weapons in 5e while talking up the ability to kill despite regen when players were planning to fight trolls and the reaction was outrage that it might be needed when at will cantrips available to multiple PCs at the table did that automatically with no action economy or efficacy cost.

So you threw the trolls at them in a dead magic zone, right? :)

I like the concept and I'm going to steal it, which is the highest form of flattery!

It's mostly a ribbon ability...except when it isn't. In our last home game, the party narrowly defeated a rakshasa and his minions, and made off with his ledger. So you know he'll keep coming back. Getting a weapon that could do something about it would be pretty useful for them. I bet there's a whole quest in it!

How would you value a weapon that cancelled the various types of Restoration - so it would cause permanent death rather than banishment for extraplanar entities? Maybe to a max of CR 20.
It would be artifact level. You're messing with one of the fundamental laws of the cosmos, that those beings regenerate. World building, such items, if capable of being widely produced, would impact the blood war, disrupting it in favor of demons with unlimited numbers. I could see such an artifact with the Inevitables, where they just need to perma delete something from the cosmos.

I've seen others say it's no tangible benefit, but narratively extraplanar creatures would be terrified of facing such a weapon, and likely dip out of any fight as fast as they could. Think a level draining rust monster vs a fighter.

there's no tangible mechanical benefit. narratively it's insane.

that would still be narrative, not mechanical, especially since a DM might simply not grasp what an extraplanar would actually think when seeing it. mechanical would be if creatures who would be effected by the weapon had to save versus fear when seeing it or something similar.

One of the core conceits of the Eberron setting is that immortal spirits (outsiders in 3e terminology) absolutely cannot be permanently killed – or at least, that their spiritual energy can't. So even the hardest kill of an outsider can't actually reduce the number of that sort of outsider permanently. You might destroy that identity (and even that is hard), but not the underlying concept.

The solution, of course, is that you don't kill them. You trap them. Bind them and force them into quiescence where they won't do any harm.

In my game this would be some sort of unique McGuffin that is part of the campaign plot.
This.

Ultimately I agree the Power budget of this weapon isn't super high. I wouldn't give that to a player and then not give them other magic items because they already have "a big powerful weapon".

But its definately not something you could just make or buy. It would be a very special campaign item that would have huge thematic aspects, but wouldn't really change combats all that much.

Who's to say that they'd recognise one?
Nothing requires it to be recognized. And it would be cool role play to see the look of shocked fear on their face as they realize they are done for.

But all in all, I like "bane" weapons (which i consider this to be a type of) to have the target feel unpleasant revulsion emanating off the weapon that spells their doom.
