Not to mention, unless it's something massive -- Galadriel as the Dark Lady -- a lot of it can be chalked up to "well, your handful of rangers isolated in the North aren't 100% clear what the heck is going on in the rest of the world, and vice-versa."

Was there a minor servant of Sauron in an isolated area we never heard about during Lord of the Rings? Probably! Let the GM cook, people.

Gaming in an existing property should be inspiring rather than limiting. As long as it feels right, GMs should be able to get creative.

Getting back to Dragonlance, to my mind, at its best it's about personal stories playing out against a backdrop of war and epic conflict. The gripes of old Flint Fireforge, the Tanis-Kitiara-Laurana love triangle, the melancholy of Sturm as he aspires to a faded ideal, all that is as important to the mood as the Dragon Armies.

In my experience "Break the canon" is a overated problem, in many tables the PC WANT to break the canon

Yeah, you'll always get someone that wants to play a droid jedi in Star Wars, or a half-orc in Dragonlance (don't get me started on the mishmash of worldbuilding that is current D&D). All that being said, I suspect players are less forgiving of a GM's lapses in canon. If I had Count Dooku show up through a time warp in a Star Wars game, I am not sure how that would land.

Weirdly, that now seems to be the official timeline - the Destinies trilogy appears to have retconned things. (By "that" I mean the summer of Chaos not happening.)

At this point, Weis at least takes the approach that the only 'canon' is the first six novels.

Another thing that she's brought up on Twitter in the past day or two as part of the project is the option for Dragonarmy campaigns and draconian PCs.

I think there would be 9 novels...

The Lost Chronicles should probably also be in that Canon list...or so I would think.

I only know what I have seen said; I am probably one of the least qualified men on Earth to interpret the mind of Margaret Weis. :)
