That truly sucks. Let me tell you a tale of my university days that may bring a small smile to your face in this time of adversity.

You know the smell of natural gas? Surprisingly, it's basically odorless, the distinctive smell everyone knows is an additive specifically so you can smell it. It's 1-20 parts per million, trace amounts.

So, two friends of mine were working with it in it's pure form on evening. Properly, in the chemistry lab, under the hood. However, the filters on the roof were incorrect and couldn't filter it out. The gas company suddenly started getting inundated with calls about a gas leak, smelling very strong in a several block radius.

To put this in perspective, this is a dense, US city of well over a quarter million people time.

When done they came out of the lab, noses deadened to it, to encounter a squad of firemen in full regalia clearing the building of everyone inside. With a frantic haste of people who know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that one spark and they are all dead.

It took a bit but it all got straightened out over hours, days, and weeks. With fire the firefighters, then the gas company, and then the university. They had been working with it for a professor, everything properly done and signed out, and their lab safety routine had been correct as well. No idea what fallout that the wrong filters had been used on the roof, that's not an embarrassment that would be shared by the university with us students.

So that's my story of the gas-leak-that-wasn't, and I hope in your trying time it can bring a modicum of cheer.
