Just finished season 4 of From. What a cliff hanger! Cant wait for the final season becasue things are coming to a head finally!

Watched two first episodes of Sugar. Engaging. I like the fabricated detective noir vibe using the editing and old movie clips.

I'm still on a run of watching older stuff. I had only ever caught half of "Dead Like Me" season 1 and had never seen the movie, so I took care of that over the last 10 days or so. I wonder what ever happened to Ellen Muth? She was great in it.

Watched Armour of God, which is a solid Jackie Chan action film from 1986. Solid, sentimental, sexist, slightly racist, mostly what you’d expect. The Croatian scenery is lovely. The action sequences are fine but probably not worth Jackie getting a permanent skull fracture.

Up to the most recent season of Murdoch Mysteries and things had been holding true to form (they will meet famous people, they will invent things, and Julia will occasionally do really annoying things.- but if you give it that it is a lot of fun).

I have two proposed alternate titles to Season 19 Episode 2: "WTF George Crabtree, WTF" or "George hands Julia his Beer".

Watched Once a Thief, a somewhat obscure John Woo film from 1991, and sadly I can see why it’s obscure. It’s an interesting premise - heist action comedy thriller, more than a few references to the Hitchcock and Cary Grant film* of the same name, and of course you’ve got Chow Yun Fat, the Chinese Cary Grant in his prime, as one of the leads along with Leslie Cheung and Cherie Chung, not to mention Kenneth Tsang as a very hissable villain. Locations in Paris and HK.

But honestly Woo wastes all that with sentimentality, slapstick, stupidly frenetic action, and a lot of mugging and clowning from Chow. It weirdly makes many of his heroic bloodshed films look worse in retrospect because it shows up their kinetic gunplay sequences as obviously artificial and never more than a moment away from turning into Buster Keaton. Or maybe Feng Shui should have rules for slapstick comedy.

Probably the best thing about it is that it somehow got adapted into a Canadian TV series for one season, but I’ve never seen the series and have no idea how good it was.

*I’m quite wrong about this, I was thinking of To Catch a Thief.

The series has sentimental value for us because we saw it when it came out, but it's not very good after rewatching a few episodes last year. The budge was ridiculously low compared to streaming shows these days. It's very jarring. But the actors are all top notch and did their best.

My wife's a big fan of that show (and Yannick Bisson, the lead actor) - she has the first 18 seasons on DVD and is waiting for season 19 to become available on 21 July.
