The metaphor doesn’t work. It’s not like saying “hey, you can’t use Strixhaven in our Forgotten Realms game”. It’s like having new pages show up in the Players Handbook automatically. These aren’t options players select, they’re added automatically. So players feel like of course this stuff is allowed until a DM has to explicitly exclude it.

This is the reason so many complained about Silvery Barbs. It wasn’t because the spell itself is busted. It’s because anyone who had it didn’t even remember what book it was from and DDB didn’t have (and doesn’t have I don’t think) a good way for a DM to filter material at the book level.

So now WOtC is adding lots of new stuff and thr DM is the bad guy for saying “yeah, no”.

I’m glad you have no problem with any of this. I do and so do many others.

people have mentioned SLyFlourish, which I do not know
That guy, from the Lazy Talk Show.

I don't currently play any edition of D&D (I may or may not play D&D or a very closely related game at some point in the future), although I am running a non-D&D game in the Forgotten Realms. I haven't voted, on the assumption I am not the target demographic for this poll, but happy to add my votes if they're wanted.

I play in person only. Tried online play, not my cup of tea.

Physical books, those i use for reading, be it farming for lore/setting ideas, learning rules, or just enjoying artwork. For creating characters, monsters or rules check up in game, free online stuff. Rules wise, one group is 2014 5e, other one is PF1.

I hang out here, sometimes on D&D subreddits. But mainly here.

As for youtubers, it depends who pops up on recommended and what topic video is about. Personally, i find lots of stuff most popular dndtubers talk about superfluous and aimed for beginners and intermediate players.

The poll results right now are really telling - only about a quarter of respondents use DDB. That's a distinct difference between EnWorld users and typical players. I feel like that explains a lot of the threads we see.
Can you unpack what you mean by this last sentence, please? (I don't use DDB.)

Is it? What stats do we have regarding total active D&D players versus D&D Beyond users?

Currently, I play mainly in person, with physical books, a mix of 5e and 5.5e with some house rules, but primarily 5.5e. I occasionally watch D&D YouTube, though much less often than I used to because I feel like a lot of them have kind of run out of good stuff to talk about and/or have been forced by the algorithm to resort to pretty sloppy content. Still enjoying Mystic Arts a fair bit. I’ve been a passive Critical Role fan since before Campaign 2 started, but only sporadically watched clips; since campaign 4 I’ve been watching every new episode as it airs. ENWorld is the only D&D forum I currently frequent.

All of the above is “currently” because I’m in a holding pattern with D&D right now, and preparing to either transition to a different system or resolve to stick to the material I currently own, if current events involving WotC develop in such a way that I can no longer support.
