I picked up a copy of NUELOW Games'
Carnival & Terror (affiliate link) for
d20 Modern OGL Modern games.
I picked this one up on a whim. Being only $0.50, it felt like a worthwhile investment; I appreciate that NUELOW Games is essentially the only company left that's supporting d20 Modern, and given that they've recently been putting out more supplements that are pure d20 content (as opposed to being interspersed with public domain stories or comics), I wanted to support them. It also helps that I like the niche areas that they frequently focus on.
Which, in this case, is clowns. Here, the focus is on jesters (who are clowns that utilize physical comedy to help their allies and hinder their enemies) and harlequins (who play into the "clowns are creepy" trope to unsettle enemies). Both utilize a combination of feats and talent trees; I confess that I was a bit surprised to find no new starting occupations or equipment here, since things like a "stand-up comic" starting occupation or a
marotte would have fit right in here. A missed opportunity, perhaps.
As it stands, there's nothing here that I can complain about per se; the new content does what it's supposed to, and everything seemed balanced by the standards of d20 Modern (though underpowered for, say, Pathfinder 1E). But at the same time, nothing really wowed me here either; you're getting bonuses to skills, inflicting minor debuffs, granting bonuses to allies, etc. This isn't a bad supplement by any means, but neither was it anything to write home about.
Still, for four bits I can't really say that this wasn't worthwhile. The new content does make an effort to be flavorful, presenting the mechanics with plenty of descriptive text to make it clear how they function from an in-game perspective, which is always nice. A small amount of nonlethal damage and potentially blinding someone for a round if they fail their save is a decent mechanic, but having it be because you threw a pie in their face makes it much more colorful.
Overall, while it didn't go the extra mile, I don't feel like a bozo for purchasing this.
